    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Wildebeest crossing season

Late July through September is when the herds cross the Mara River. Most tours skip the prime crossing windows by camping too far upstream. Tibro's Mara nights are timed for it. If you can travel in August, do.

    2

    Altitude on Day One

Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres. Coming from Mumbai or Delhi, expect a slightly thin head for 24 hours and drink more water than feels normal. Skip the Tusker your first night; pick it up at the Mara.

    3

    Fly the Mara transfer

The Nairobi-to-Mara road is five hours of corrugated dirt. The light aircraft from Wilson Airport does it in fifty minutes for around USD 250 each way. Worth every shilling unless you specifically want to see rural Kenya pass the window.

    When to Go

Kenya runs on two dry seasons and two rain seasons. June to October is the long dry. Golden grass, wildebeest crossings, the iconic safari window. January to February is a quieter shoulder with clear skies and far fewer vehicles. The long rains (March-May) are when most camps close.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Aberdare Country Club — Aberdare, Kenya

Day 1. Aberdare Country Club, cedar mist

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We drove up from Nairobi and the temperature dropped a degree every few minutes. By the time we reached the club the lawns were grey with mist and a colobus monkey was watching from the cedar.

    Aberdare01
Hippos below — Lake Naivasha, Kenya

Day 2. Hippos below the lawn at Naivasha

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The lodge warns you not to walk to the water at night. We understood why at dinner, when a hippo hauled itself out of the lake forty feet from the terrace and started grazing the lawn.

    Lake Naivasha02
Long drive west — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 3. Long drive west into the Mara

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The escarpment road is rough and beautiful. You drop off the Rift wall and the whole reserve opens below. Flat, gold, and dotted with the shadows of cloud.

    Masai Mara03
Two lionesses — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 5. Two lionesses and a kill, before breakfast

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

We left camp at first light and found them within the hour. Two lionesses on a wildebeest, feeding fast before the hyenas arrived. The guide cut the engine and we just sat.
