    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Wildebeest crossing season

Late July through September is when the herds cross the Mara River. Most tours skip the prime crossing windows by camping too far upstream. Tibro's Mara nights are timed for it. If you can travel in August, do.

    2

    Altitude on Day One

Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres. Coming from Mumbai or Delhi, expect a slightly thin head for 24 hours and drink more water than feels normal. Skip the Tusker your first night; pick it up at the Mara.

    3

    Fly the Mara transfer

The Nairobi-to-Mara road is five hours of corrugated dirt. The light aircraft from Wilson Airport does it in fifty minutes for around USD 250 each way. Worth every shilling unless you specifically want to see rural Kenya pass the window.

    When to Go

Kenya runs on two dry seasons and two rain seasons. June to October is the long dry. Golden grass, wildebeest crossings, the iconic safari window. January to February is a quieter shoulder with clear skies and far fewer vehicles. The long rains (March-May) are when most camps close.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    cruiser — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 1. First cruiser into the Mara, low sun

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We landed at the airstrip and were on a game drive before the dust settled. A coalition of three cheetah brothers sat on a termite mound, watching the gazelle the way we were watching them.

    Masai Mara01
Mara plains — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 2. Mara plains, full day out

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The guide packed lunch so we never had to come back. By noon we had crossed the same river twice, following a hyena clan that knew exactly where the leftovers were.

    Masai Mara02
Pink shoreline — Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Day 3. Pink shoreline at Nakuru

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

I had seen the flamingo photos and assumed they were exaggerated. They were not. The far shore was a single moving line of pink, and a white rhino grazed in the foreground as if posing.

Day 4. The Ark, waterhole after dark

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The lodge sits over a floodlit waterhole and they ring a buzzer in your room when something big arrives. At 1am it was a lone bull elephant, drinking in total silence.
