    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Wildebeest crossing season

Late July through September is when the herds cross the Mara River. Most tours skip the prime crossing windows by camping too far upstream. Tibro's Mara nights are timed for it. If you can travel in August, do.

    2

    Altitude on Day One

Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres. Coming from Mumbai or Delhi, expect a slightly thin head for 24 hours and drink more water than feels normal. Skip the Tusker your first night; pick it up at the Mara.

    3

    Fly the Mara transfer

The Nairobi-to-Mara road is five hours of corrugated dirt. The light aircraft from Wilson Airport does it in fifty minutes for around USD 250 each way. Worth every shilling unless you specifically want to see rural Kenya pass the window.

    When to Go

Kenya runs on two dry seasons and two rain seasons. June to October is the long dry. Golden grass, wildebeest crossings, the iconic safari window. January to February is a quieter shoulder with clear skies and far fewer vehicles. The long rains (March-May) are when most camps close.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Nairobi, Kenya

Day 1. Arrival dinner at Four Points

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The flight got in late and the city was already asleep. We ate a quiet dinner at the hotel and slept off the journey, knowing the early start would come fast.

Day 2. Down the Rift wall to Keekorok

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The drive from Nairobi takes most of the day, but the last hour. Dropping off the escarpment into the reserve. Is the one you remember. We saw our first giraffe before we reached the gate.

Day 3. Dawn drive, leopard in a fig

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The guide had a hunch and drove straight to a river fig. A leopard lay along the branch with the back legs of an impala still hanging beside it. We watched until the light got hard.

    Masai Mara03
Hot air balloon — Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 4. Hot-air balloon, plains at dawn

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

We took the optional balloon. The burner roared, then went silent, and we drifted low over a herd of elephant who barely looked up. Breakfast was laid out on the grass where we landed.
