    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The north-south climate split

Vietnam is long enough that the weather rarely agrees with itself. When Hanoi is cold and drizzling in January, Saigon is dry and 32 degrees, and Da Nang in the middle does its own thing. Pack for two countries and don't trust a single national forecast.

    2

    Crossing the road in Hanoi

The motorbikes don't stop, so you don't wait for a gap. You step off the kerb and walk at a slow, steady pace without flinching, and the scooters flow around you. Hesitating mid-stream is what gets people clipped. Commit and keep moving; the locals will tell you the same.

    3

    Halong overnight, not day trip

The day-trippers from Hanoi see Halong Bay between eleven and three. The worst light and the biggest crowds. The overnight junks pull into quiet anchorages after the fleet leaves, and you get the karsts at dawn with the kayaks to yourself. Always take the overnight when the itinerary offers it.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Vietnam's length makes one rule impossible, but the broad window is October to April, when the country is at its driest and coolest. The southern beaches. Phu Quoc, Saigon. Hold dry through April; the centre around Da Nang and Hoi An floods September to November; the north, Hanoi and Sapa, is cold and misty December to February but clear. June to August is the hot, wet monsoon in the south and centre.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Tam Coc — Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Day 2. Tam Coc, the foot-rowed sampan

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Tam Coc is the Halong on land. A sampan rowed through three river caves between limestone karsts and flooded paddy. Hoa Lu nearby was the tenth-century capital. The boatwoman works the oars with her feet, and you sit low to clear the cave roofs.

    Ninh Binh01
    Halong — Halong Bay, Vietnam

Day 3. Halong, the junk at anchor

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The overnight junk pulls into a quiet anchorage once the day fleet leaves for Hanoi. Dinner is on deck among the karsts; the kayaks go out at dusk. Dawn over the limestone, with the bay to yourself, is the point of the overnight.

    Halong Bay02
    Da Nang, Vietnam

Day 5. Ba Na, the Golden Bridge hands

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Ba Na Hills above Da Nang is reached by a long cable car into the cloud forest; the Golden Bridge, held on two giant stone hands, is the set-piece. The French Village at the top is a built replica. Go early before the cloud closes in.

    Da Nang03
Cam Thanh — Hoi An, Vietnam

Day 6. Cam Thanh, the basket boats

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Cam Thanh's water-coconut palms are worked from round bamboo basket boats. The guides spin them on the spot for tips. Hoi An's old town is the afternoon, car-free and lantern-lit by dark. The tailors turn a measured suit around in a day.
