    Vietnam,

Preface, on the country that takes the long way

Vietnam is a 1,650-kilometre country that takes two hours to fly end to end and three weeks to do honestly. The north is one country (cool, mountainous, Chinese-influenced), the centre is another (imperial, food-obsessed, slow), the south is a third (tropical, French-influenced, frenetic). You will not see all three properly on a first visit. Pick the version you came for; we'll add the other two on your second.

    Colophon

    A small note
    on how we work.

Tibro has been routing Vietnam since 2010. Through the years before it became an obvious Indian-passport destination, and after.

We work with two partner studios. One in Hanoi run by Phuong (former trade reporter, now full-time designer), one in Saigon run by Linh (twenty years as a French-Vietnamese hotelier before turning to itineraries). Whoever's region you anchor in becomes your principal contact.

Hotels in Vietnam vary wildly between the international chains and the boutique-French-colonial-villa school. We prefer the latter when the property has soul, the former when the location is everything.

Twenty-three routes is the current shape. We rotate one every six months as new boutique properties open and old ones lose their gardeners.

Hanoi, Ha Long, Hoi An, eleven nights, October 2024

Phuong met us at our Hanoi hotel for breakfast on the first morning with a hand-drawn map of the Old Quarter that listed eight street-food stalls and which hour each was good. She did this on her own time. We ate at six of the eight. The trip ran on those notes.

Mekong & Phu Quoc, nine nights, February 2025

We did the Mekong slowly. Three nights on a converted rice barge that stopped at floating markets at five in the morning. The barge was a Linh recommendation; we would not have found it on our own. Phu Quoc at the end for the beach and the decompression. The country we expected was loud; the country we got was paced.

Sapa & northern villages, eight nights, November 2024

Phuong put us on the night train to Sapa in a sleeper cabin she had personally inspected the week before. Two nights in a Hmong homestay where the daughter taught us to make banh chung. Two nights in a French-colonial hotel in Sapa town with a view of Fansipan. Cold every night; the right kind of cold.

    or which dish.

A line is enough. North, centre, south. Or just the dish you came for. Phuong or Linh will write back inside the working day.
