On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Madrid, Spain

Day 2. An afternoon in the Prado

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Prado took a full afternoon and we still rushed it. Velázquez's Las Meninas, the dark Goyas downstairs. The Royal Palace that morning had set the scale: Madrid does grandeur plainly.

    Madrid01
Gaud unfinished nave — Barcelona, Spain

    Day 4. Gaudí's unfinished nave

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Off the train from Madrid and straight into the Sagrada Família, still half-built and still the most alive building I've stood inside. Barcelona earns its name in a single morning.

    Barcelona02
    Mudejar arches — Seville, Spain

Day 6. Mudejar arches at the Alcázar

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The Real Alcázar in Seville is Mudejar work. Horseshoe arches, tiled courtyards, the gardens where the orange trees hung heavy. You forget you're a train ride from Madrid's hush.

    Seville03
    Lisbon, Spain

Day 10. The cliff at Cabo da Roca

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

We drove out to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost edge of the mainland, where the cliff drops to the Atlantic and the wind takes your hat. Sintra's painted Pena Palace had been the morning; this was the full stop.
