    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Gaud — Barcelona, Spain

Day 2. Gaudí, then the Gothic Quarter

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The guided Sagrada Família in the morning. The tree-column nave, the colour pouring through. Then the narrow lanes of the Barri Gòtic in the afternoon. Barcelona rewards walking; we ate standing at a bar, small plates, a vermut before lunch.

    Barcelona01
    Seville, Spain

Day 4. The Alcázar's tiled courts

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Seville's Real Alcázar is still a working royal palace, the Mudéjar tilework and the still pools and the Game of Thrones gardens. Then the cathedral, biggest Gothic church anywhere, Columbus's tomb held up by four kings. The heat by midday sent us indoors, as the locals do.

    Seville02
    Madrid, Spain

Day 6. The Bernabéu and the Royal Palace

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Madrid did its grand half-day. The Santiago Bernabéu, then the Palacio Real with the throne rooms and the armoury, skip-the-line so we weren't melting in a queue. Madrid feels like the capital it is, broad and stately, with a tapas crawl waiting for the night.

    Madrid03
Segovia two thousand — Segovia, Spain

    Day 7. Segovia's two-thousand-year aqueduct

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The day trip took in Toledo first. The whole hill city above the Tagus gorge, El Greco's town, steel and marzipan. Then Segovia, where the Roman aqueduct marches across the square on stone arches, no mortar, still standing after two millennia. Two old capitals in a day.
