    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Dinner starts at ten

Spain runs late. Kitchens that open at 8.30 fill at 10, and a 7pm table marks you as a tourist eating alone. Take the long lunch. The menú del día is the locals' good-value meal. Then a siesta, then dinner when the city does. Fighting the clock just leaves you in empty rooms.

    2

    Book the Alhambra weeks out

The Nasrid Palaces inside the Alhambra release a fixed number of timed tickets, and they sell out a month ahead in season. The general grounds ticket does not include them. Book the specific Nasrid slot the moment your dates are fixed, not the week you arrive, or you will see Granada's great Moorish palace only from the gardens.

    3

    The afternoon shutters

Between roughly 2 and 5, smaller shops and many sights close, especially away from the big cities and in the August heat. It is not laziness. It is the hottest stretch of an Andalucian day. Plan the museums and the meal for then and save the walking for the cooler evening.

    When to Go

Spain is at its best in the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October, when the south is warm but not punishing and the cities are uncrowded. July and August bring real heat to the interior, Madrid and Seville climbing past 38 degrees, though the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts stay swimmable and lively. Winter, November to March, is mild and quiet on the coast, cool and clear inland; the Tomatina itself falls on the last Wednesday of August, in the thick of the heat.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Inside — Barcelona, Spain

Day 2. Inside the Sagrada Família

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

We had skip-the-line for the Sagrada Família and the guide was worth it. The columns branch like trees and the stained glass throws the whole nave into colour by mid-morning. Still unfinished after 140 years, cranes and all. The hop-on bus did the rest of Gaudí's city.

    Barcelona01
    Seville, Spain

Day 3. The AVE south to Seville

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The high-speed train down to Seville is the easy way to cross Spain. City centre to city centre, no airport. By afternoon we were under the Giralda, the old minaret turned cathedral tower, the orange trees of the Patio in the heat below.

    Seville02
    Granada, Spain

Day 4. The Nasrid courts at Granada

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The day trip up to Granada for the Alhambra. We'd booked the Nasrid Palaces slot weeks ahead, which is the only way in. The carved stucco and the still water of the Court of the Lions, the Generalife gardens above. The last great Moorish palace in Europe, and it earns every word.

    Granada03
    Flamenco — Madrid, Spain

Day 5. Flamenco, close and loud

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Madrid in the evening, a small flamenco tablao. The heel-work and the palmas at arm's length, no microphones, the guitarist's face doing half the work. Then out into a city that doesn't really start dinner until ten. We learned to wait for it.
