    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The hemisphere is upside down

South Africa's seasons run opposite to home. December and January are high summer, June and July are winter. For Cape Town and the Garden Route, the November-to-March summer is the beach-and-wine window. For Kruger and the safari reserves it flips: the May-to-September dry winter is far better game viewing, when the bush thins and animals crowd the waterholes. A trip doing both compromises on one.

    2

    Tipping and the car guards

Tipping is woven into the economy here. Ten to fifteen percent in restaurants, and the orange-bibbed 'car guards' who watch your parked car expect a few rand when you return. Keep a pocket of coins and small notes. It feels constant at first; it's how a lot of people earn, and the sums are small.

    3

    The dawn game drive

The animals move at the edges of the day, so the good drives leave camp before sunrise and again in the late afternoon. Cold, dark, and worth every minute as the bush wakes up. Layer up; an open vehicle at 6am in winter is genuinely freezing even when noon hits the high twenties. The midday hours are for the pool and a nap.

    When to Go

South Africa rewards different months for different things, because the seasons are southern-hemisphere flipped. The Cape and the Garden Route are at their best in the warm, dry summer from November to March. The big-game reserves. Kruger and the private lodges. View best in the dry winter from May to September, when thin bush and busy waterholes bring the animals into the open. April, May, September and October are the broad shoulder months that balance both. The deep summer can be hot and afternoon-stormy inland.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Cape Town — Cape Town, South Africa

Day 2. Cape Town, the mountain and the bay

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The cable car up Table Mountain rotates as it climbs and the whole Cape unrolls below. The city bowl, Lion's Head, Robben Island out in the bay. They close it when the wind's up, so go on the first clear morning you get. The V&A waterfront down below is where the day ends.

    Cape Town01
    Knysna — Knysna, South Africa

Day 4. Knysna, the lagoon and the Heads

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Knysna sits on a lagoon that opens to the sea through the Heads, two sandstone cliffs the ocean pours between. You take a small boat out to the gap and the swell picks up as you near it. The town runs on oysters and slow afternoons. The forest behind it is the last of South Africa's indigenous woodland.

    Knysna02
    Oudtshoorn — Oudtshoorn, South Africa

Day 5. Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Oudtshoorn is ostrich country. The farms will let you stand near the birds, and the brave ride them, which the birds clearly resent. The Cango Caves nearby go deep into the limestone, chamber after chamber of dripstone, and the optional 'adventure' route has you squeezing through gaps best skipped if you're broad in the shoulder.

    Oudtshoorn03
    Amakhala — Amakhala, South Africa

    Day 7. Amakhala, malaria-free game

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

Amakhala is a private reserve near Port Elizabeth, malaria-free, which makes it the easy Eastern Cape safari at the end of the Garden Route rather than a long haul north to Kruger. The dawn drive turned up rhino and a herd of elephant at the river. The lodge does the cold morning coffee-stop in the bush properly.
