    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Summer is at Christmas

New Zealand's seasons are flipped. December to February is high summer, with the long daylight that makes the South Island walks possible, and June to August is winter, which is exactly when the Queenstown ski fields open. A summer trip gives you the Milford cruises and the alpine passes clear; a winter one gives you snow and short days. Don't pack for the calendar you're used to.

    2

    The sandfly at Milford

The West Coast and the fiords are stunning and full of sandflies. Tiny biting insects that the Maori legend says were sent to stop people lingering too long in paradise. They are relentless at Milford Sound and on the glacier walks. Bring repellent and long sleeves; the bites itch for days and arrive the moment you stop moving.

    3

The roads are slower than they look

Distances on the South Island map are short but the roads are winding, single-lane in places, and cross mountain passes. Queenstown to the West Coast glaciers is half a day, not two hours. They drive on the left. Build in more time than the kilometres suggest, and stop at the lookouts; the drive between places is half the country's beauty.

    When to Go

New Zealand's window is the southern summer, roughly November to April, when the days are long, the alpine passes and the Milford road are clear, and the South Island walks are open. The shoulder months of April and October are quieter and still good. Winter, June to September, is short-dayed and cold but it's when Queenstown's ski fields come alive, so it isn't a closed season so much as a different one. The far south can throw all four seasons at you in a single day, summer or not.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Waitomo — Rotorua, New Zealand

Day 2. Waitomo, the glow-worm dark

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

On the way south to Rotorua you stop at Waitomo and drift through the caves under a ceiling of glow-worms. Thousands of pinpricks of cold light reflected in the black water. Then Rotorua itself, steaming with sulphur, the geothermal heart of the North Island. The contrast in a single day is the country in miniature.

    Rotorua01
    Queenstown — Queenstown, New Zealand

Day 4. Queenstown, the lake and the peaks

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Queenstown sits on a fjord-like lake under the Remarkables, and it's the South Island's hub for everything fast. Jet boats, gondolas, the bungy that started it all on the Kawarau bridge. But the quiet pleasure is the lake itself at dawn, flat and cold, the peaks doubled in it. A good base for a couple of nights either way.

    Queenstown02
Franz Josef — Franz Josef, New Zealand

Day 6. Franz Josef, ice in the rainforest

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Franz Josef is one of the few glaciers on earth that flows down through temperate rainforest almost to sea level. You walk in through dripping bush and there is the wall of blue ice. The heli-hike lands you on top of it; the valley walk gets you to its foot. The West Coast weather is wild and the sandflies are merciless, both worth enduring.

    Franz Josef03
    Christchurch — Christchurch, New Zealand

Day 8. Christchurch, the rebuilt city

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

Christchurch is still rebuilding from the 2011 earthquake, and that's the interesting thing about it now. The Cardboard Cathedral, the street art, the gap-filler gardens where buildings used to be, a city remaking itself in the open. The vintage tram loops the centre. It's the calm end of the trip after the glaciers and the lakes.
