    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Summer is at Christmas

New Zealand's seasons are flipped. December to February is high summer, with the long daylight that makes the South Island walks possible, and June to August is winter, which is exactly when the Queenstown ski fields open. A summer trip gives you the Milford cruises and the alpine passes clear; a winter one gives you snow and short days. Don't pack for the calendar you're used to.

    2

    The sandfly at Milford

The West Coast and the fiords are stunning and full of sandflies. Tiny biting insects that the Maori legend says were sent to stop people lingering too long in paradise. They are relentless at Milford Sound and on the glacier walks. Bring repellent and long sleeves; the bites itch for days and arrive the moment you stop moving.

    3

The roads are slower than they look

Distances on the South Island map are short but the roads are winding, single-lane in places, and cross mountain passes. Queenstown to the West Coast glaciers is half a day, not two hours. They drive on the left. Build in more time than the kilometres suggest, and stop at the lookouts; the drive between places is half the country's beauty.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

New Zealand's window is the southern summer, roughly November to April, when the days are long, the alpine passes and the Milford road are clear, and the South Island walks are open. The shoulder months of April and October are quieter and still good. Winter, June to September, is short-dayed and cold but it's when Queenstown's ski fields come alive, so it isn't a closed season so much as a different one. The far south can throw all four seasons at you in a single day, summer or not.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Hobbiton — Hobbiton, New Zealand

Day 2. Hobbiton, the round green doors

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Hobbiton set near Matamata was left standing after the films. The round doors set into the hillside, the vegetable plots tended, the Green Dragon pouring a real ale at the end. It's unashamedly a film set and somehow still charming, the Shire made literal on a working sheep farm. Waitomo's glow-worm caves the same day are the other-worldly counterpoint.

    Hobbiton01
    Waitomo — Waitomo, New Zealand

    Day 2. Waitomo, stars underground

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

You drift in a small boat through the Waitomo caves in total dark, and the ceiling above is a galaxy. Thousands of glow-worms, their threads of light reflected in the still water. No photos allowed and none would work. It is the quietest, strangest fifteen minutes of the trip.

    Waitomo02
    Rotorua — Rotorua, New Zealand

Day 3. Rotorua, the floatplane to the crater

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The floatplane lifts off the lake at Rotorua and banks over the crater lakes, the geothermal country steaming below. Bush-green and sulphur-yellow and the deep blue of the cold lakes. It lands you on the water of a hidden one for a few minutes of total silence. Then back over the steam to town.

    Rotorua03
Milford — Milford Sound, New Zealand

Day 6. Milford, the wall of waterfalls

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Milford in the rain is Milford at its best. The cliffs running with hundreds of temporary waterfalls that vanish when the sun comes out. The cruise noses the bow under Stirling Falls until everyone's drenched and laughing. The road in, through the Homer Tunnel and down the Cleddau valley, is the South Island showing off.
