Enjoy the rest of the day getting your bearings and exploring the neighbourhood. Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia. Its modern skyline is dominated by the 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers, a pair of glass-and-steel-clad skyscrapers with Islamic motifs. The towers also offer a public skybridge and observation deck. The city is also home to British colonial-era landmarks such as the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building.

You can take pictures of a couple of magnificent city symbols dominating the KL skyline which are the breathtaking Petronas Towers, the tallest twin buildings in the world and two 88-story Islamic masterpieces with a post-modern architectural design which was in 1996. The equally impressive KL Tower has the highest viewpoint in KL because it’s also the seventh tallest communication tower in the world which tourists can experience because it’s open to the public The tour will drive past the picturesque and sprawling 91.6-hectare urban park known as Lake Gardens on your way to the National Monument, a historical structure that commemorates Malaysia’s fight for freedom during World War II. In the nearby National Mosque of Malaysia tourists can feast their eyes on its awe-inspiring modern construction built using a modern architectural style in reinforced concrete to symbolize the country’s newly-gained independence. Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Book the Petronas walkway ahead

The skybridge and observation deck of the Petronas Towers sell a fixed number of timed tickets a day and they go early. Book online before you fly, not at the counter. Sunset slots vanish first. For the photograph of the towers themselves, the KLCC park fountains opposite, after dark, beat any deck.

    2

    The afternoon downpour is reliable

Equatorial Malaysia runs hot and humid all year, and most days build to a heavy hour of rain in the late afternoon that clears as fast as it came. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning, the malls or a long lunch for around three, and carry a small umbrella. The rain is part of the rhythm, not a ruined day.

    3

    Eat where three cuisines meet

Malaysia's food is Malay, Chinese and Indian layered together. Laksa, char kway teow, banana-leaf rice, roti canai for breakfast. The hawker stalls and kopitiams beat the hotel restaurants every time. Point at what the queue is eating; the busiest stall is busy for a reason, and a meal rarely runs past a few ringgit.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Malaysia sits on the equator, so it is hot and humid year-round with no real off-season. The question is rain, not temperature. The west coast, where Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and the highlands sit, is at its driest from December to March and again June to August, with the wetter inter-monsoon spells around April-May and October-November bringing the heaviest afternoon downpours. Genting and the Cameron Highlands stay cool whatever the lowlands do. Travel any month; just expect an hour of rain most afternoons.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 2. The towers over KLCC park

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The half-day city tour does the highlights, but the towers are best after dark from the KLCC park. The fountains going, the two spires lit silver against the sky. We came back at night for it. The skybridge tickets we'd booked weeks ahead.

    Kuala Lumpur01
Batu Caves — Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 3. Batu Caves, 272 painted steps

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The Batu Caves photostop is brief but the climb up the rainbow steps past the giant gold statue is the one everyone remembers. Monkeys on the rail, the cave temple cool and echoing at the top. We were back in the car before the heat peaked.

    Kuala Lumpur02
    Genting Highlands, Malaysia

Day 3. The cable car into the cloud

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The Genting Skyway lifts you off the lowland heat into actual cloud. The temperature drops ten degrees by the top and the casino-resort city appears out of the mist. We rode it for the climb more than the casino at the summit.

    Genting Highlands03
    Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Day 3. The first rain of the afternoon

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

By three the sky went dark and the afternoon downpour arrived on schedule. We ducked into a kopitiam for kaya toast and kopi while it hammered down, and twenty minutes later the streets were steaming and dry. You learn to plan around it.
