    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The Octopus card runs everything

One stored-value card taps you onto the MTR, the trams, the Star Ferry and into the convenience stores. Buy one at the airport and top it up. It saves fumbling for change in a city that does not slow down for you.

    2

Up the Peak before the haze

Victoria Peak is the view, but go early or at dusk. The midday haze flattens it and the Peak Tram queue runs long by mid-morning. The clearest air is usually the day after a winter cold front blows through.

    3

    Macau is a separate crossing

The ferry to Macau takes about an hour and it is a full immigration crossing. Bring your passport. Macau runs its own currency, the pataca, though Hong Kong dollars are taken there at par, so you rarely need to change money.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Hong Kong is at its best from October to December. Dry, clear and mild, with the harbour haze lifting and the nights cool enough for a jacket. March and April are pleasant if humid. May to September is hot, sticky and the typhoon season, when a signal-8 warning can shut the city for a day. January and February are cool and often grey, but never cold.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Breathtaking Kowloon skyline with skyscrapers and harbor at sunset

Day 2. A day at Disneyland

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Disneyland on Lantau opened it for the children. Smaller than the other parks and easier for it, the castle and the parade, and the MTR out with the Mickey-shaped windows they spotted before I did.

    Hong Kong01
Panoramic view of Hong Kong skyline with skyscrapers and Victoria Harbour from Victoria Peak

Day 3. The Big Buddha in the cloud

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The cable car up to Ngong Ping on Lantau swung over the green hills to the Big Buddha sitting huge and serene on his hill, the cloud drifting through the cables. A different Hong Kong from the harbour glitter.

    Hong Kong02
Black and white view of a baroque church facade above a hillside town square

Day 4. St Paul's standing facade

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The ferry to Macau took an hour and dropped us into a Portugal-meets-China muddle. The ruined facade of St Paul's at the top of its stair, the cobbled Senado Square, an egg tart, and the Venetian's painted-sky canals after dark.

    Macau03
Giant panda eating from a metal feeder among rocks and greenery

Day 5. Pandas at Ocean Park

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Back in Hong Kong, Ocean Park gave us the giant pandas and a cable car down the headland to the aquarium, the South China Sea spread out below. Half zoo, half theme park, and a full easy day.
