    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The Octopus card runs everything

One stored-value card taps you onto the MTR, the trams, the Star Ferry and into the convenience stores. Buy one at the airport and top it up. It saves fumbling for change in a city that does not slow down for you.

    2

Up the Peak before the haze

Victoria Peak is the view, but go early or at dusk. The midday haze flattens it and the Peak Tram queue runs long by mid-morning. The clearest air is usually the day after a winter cold front blows through.

    3

    Macau is a separate crossing

The ferry to Macau takes about an hour and it is a full immigration crossing. Bring your passport. Macau runs its own currency, the pataca, though Hong Kong dollars are taken there at par, so you rarely need to change money.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Hong Kong is at its best from October to December. Dry, clear and mild, with the harbour haze lifting and the nights cool enough for a jacket. March and April are pleasant if humid. May to September is hot, sticky and the typhoon season, when a signal-8 warning can shut the city for a day. January and February are cool and often grey, but never cold.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Lights across — Hong Kong

Day 1. Lights across the harbour

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The night tour put us on the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade for the Symphony of Lights. The island skyline firing lasers across the water at eight. Then up to a viewpoint with the whole neon sprawl laid out below.

    Hong Kong01
    Pandas — Hong Kong

Day 2. Pandas at Ocean Park

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Ocean Park took a full day. The giant pandas, the cable car along the headland with the South China Sea below, the aquarium tank you could stand under. Half zoo, half theme park, and the children never flagged.

    Hong Kong02
    Hong Kong

Day 4. The Big Buddha in the cloud

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Ngong Ping cable car on Lantau swung over the green hills to the Big Buddha, huge and calm on his hill with the cloud drifting through. The still counterpoint to the harbour's noise.

    Hong Kong03
Paul standing facade — Macau, Hong Kong

Day 7. St Paul's standing facade

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

Macau on the last full day. The ferry over, the ruined facade of St Paul's at the top of its stair, the cobbled Senado Square that could be Lisbon, an egg tart, and the casinos blazing along the Cotai strip after dark.
