Things to Look Out For
The Octopus card runs everything
One stored-value card taps you onto the MTR, the trams, the Star Ferry and into the convenience stores. Buy one at the airport and top it up. It saves fumbling for change in a city that does not slow down for you.
Up the Peak before the haze
Victoria Peak is the view, but go early or at dusk. The midday haze flattens it and the Peak Tram queue runs long by mid-morning. The clearest air is usually the day after a winter cold front blows through.
Macau is a separate crossing
The ferry to Macau takes about an hour and it is a full immigration crossing. Bring your passport. Macau runs its own currency, the pataca, though Hong Kong dollars are taken there at par, so you rarely need to change money.

Plan Your Timing
Hong Kong is at its best from October to December. Dry, clear and mild, with the harbour haze lifting and the nights cool enough for a jacket. March and April are pleasant if humid. May to September is hot, sticky and the typhoon season, when a signal-8 warning can shut the city for a day. January and February are cool and often grey, but never cold.
