    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The falls have two faces

Victoria Falls peaks just after the rains, March to May, when the Zambezi is in full flood. A curtain of water so vast the spray hides the gorge and soaks you through. By October the flow drops, the Zimbabwe side thins, but the rock face and the rainbows show clearly. Decide which you came for; you can't have both.

    2

    It runs on US dollars

Zimbabwe's own currency has collapsed more than once, and tourism here is priced and paid in US dollars. Bring clean, newer notes in small denominations, as torn or pre-2009 bills are often refused and change can be hard to get. Card acceptance is patchy; cash dollars are king.

    3

Chobe is a day across the border

The Chobe day safari crosses into Botswana and back. Carry your passport, expect a border formality at Kazungula, and know the river drive at dusk is the highlight, when the elephant herds come down to drink. It's a long but rewarding day; an early start beats the heat and the crowds at the crossing.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Zimbabwe sits below the equator, so the seasons run opposite to the north. The dry winter, June to October, is the safari and game-viewing peak. Cool, thinning bush, animals at the water. The catch at Victoria Falls is timing: the falls run fullest March to May just after the rains and thinnest by October-November. The green season, November to March, is hot and wet with dramatic storms, lush bush and superb birding but harder big-game sightings.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Spray rising — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Day 1. Spray rising over the town

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

You see the falls before you reach them. A column of spray rising over the trees, visible for miles. We arrived to that and the constant low thunder of the Zambezi going over the edge, and knew the morning would be wet.

    Victoria Falls01
Soaked through — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Day 2. Soaked through on the rim path

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The falls tour walked us the length of the rim, and we came back drenched and laughing, rainbows hanging in the mist over the gorge. A mile of water falling off a cliff, and you can stand close enough to feel it on your face.

    Victoria Falls02
    Elephants — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Day 3. Elephants at the river at dusk

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The Chobe day trip crossed into Botswana, and the river drive at dusk found the elephant herds coming down to drink and cross. We were back over the border by dark, the falls' thunder picking up again as we neared the lodge.
