    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Tipping is the wage, not a bonus

In the US, restaurant and bar staff are paid below a living wage on the assumption you'll tip. 18 to 20 percent on the pre-tax total is the floor, not generosity, and stiffing it is genuinely rude. The same goes for taxis, hotel housekeeping (a few dollars a night) and the bellhop. Menu and shelf prices also exclude sales tax, which is added at the till, so the number you see isn't the number you pay.

    2

The country is bigger than it looks

First-timers routinely under-plan distances. New York to Las Vegas is a five-hour flight, not a drive, and the West Coast cities are hours apart by car. Internal flights, not road trips, link the headline cities on a short tour. Where you do drive, the Interstates are fast and easy, but the Grand Canyon or the national parks are a serious day's outing from Vegas, not a quick hop.

    3

West Rim vs South Rim of the Canyon

From Las Vegas the day trips go to the Grand Canyon's West Rim. Closer, on Hualapai tribal land, and home to the glass Skywalk that juts out over the drop. It's the more commercial, more accessible edge. The South Rim, the classic postcard view, is far deeper and grander but a much longer haul from Vegas. Know which one your day trip books before you set the alarm.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The United States spans a continent, so the right month depends entirely on where you're headed. As a broad rule, spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) travel best across the headline cities. Mild in New York, comfortable on the West Coast, bearable in the desert. The Southwest. Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Mojave. Turns dangerously hot from June to August, well over 40°C; the Northeast is cold and can snow from December to February. For a desert-and-Vegas run like this one, aim for the spring or autumn shoulders and avoid high summer.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Golden Gate — San Francisco, USA

Day 2. Golden Gate from the bay cruise

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The bay cruise takes you out under the Golden Gate. The only way to see the whole span at once, fog permitting. It rolled in halfway, swallowing the towers, then lifted again. The half-day city tour filled in the hills.

    San Francisco01
Bixby Bridge — San Francisco, USA

Day 3. Bixby Bridge, Highway 1

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur in a day is a long drive, but Highway 1 is the reason you came. The Bixby Bridge appears around a bend with the Pacific behind it; we pulled over and just looked for a while.

    San Francisco02
Muir Woods — San Francisco, USA

Day 5. Muir Woods, the cathedral quiet

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Muir Woods across the bridge is hushed in a way cities never are. The coast redwoods close the canopy overhead and the light comes down green. People drop their voices without being asked. Sausalito after was all sun and sailboats.

    San Francisco03
    Alcatraz — San Francisco, USA

Day 6. Alcatraz, the cell doors

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The audio tour of Alcatraz is narrated by men who were locked up there, and standing in a cell with their voices in your ear is colder than the wind off the bay. The boat back gives you the skyline lit at dusk.
