    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The gorilla permit is the trip

A Bwindi gorilla-trekking permit costs around 800 US dollars a day and the daily quota per habituated family is tiny. They sell out months ahead in the dry seasons. You get a single, strictly timed hour with the gorillas once you find them. Book the permit before anything else; the whole itinerary hangs on the date it allows.

    2

It is a real hike, in real forest

Bwindi is called the Impenetrable Forest for a reason. The trek to the gorillas can be one hour or seven, up steep, muddy, root-tangled slopes at altitude. Hire a porter (it's cheap and it supports the community), wear broken-in boots and gaiters, bring a waterproof, and be honestly fit. This is not a drive-up safari.

    3

Bwindi is a long way from Entebbe

Bwindi sits in the far southwest, eight to nine hours by road from Entebbe, or a light-aircraft flight to an airstrip near the park. Don't underestimate the transfer. The drive is scenic but long on rough roads. For a short trip, the flight is worth the cost; it buys you a day of forest instead of a day in a vehicle.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Uganda straddles the equator, so it's warm all year and the rhythm is rain, not temperature. The two dry seasons. June to September and December to February. Are the time to trek: the Bwindi trails are firmer, the forest less of a mud-bath, and the gorilla viewing at its best. The long rains (March to May) and short rains (October to November) green everything up and thin the crowds, but the trek turns slippery and permits, while easier to get, come with wetter going.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Bwindi, Uganda

Day 2. The road to Bwindi

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The transfer to Bwindi in the far southwest is long. Terraced hills, banana plots, the road climbing into the mist. The forest itself rears up dark and dense at the end of it, and you understand the name before you've taken a step. We turned in early; the trek brief was at dawn.

    Bwindi, Uganda

Day 3. The first hour with the family

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Three hours up through mud and roots, a porter hauling me over the worst of it, and then the trackers stopped and there they were. A silverback and his family, feeding, the babies tumbling. One hour, timed to the minute, a few metres away. I forgot to take photos for the first ten of it.

    Bwindi02
    second trek — Bwindi, Uganda

Day 4. A second trek, a different group

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

We'd booked a second permit, and it paid off. A different gorilla family, an easier walk, and the strange privilege of a second hour in their company. Twice is greedy and twice is right; the cost is real but you do not come all this way and ration it.

    Bwindi03
    Lake Victoria — Entebbe, Uganda

Day 5. Lake Victoria on the way out

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The flight back to Entebbe and a last look at Lake Victoria, vast and flat and silver, the fishing boats out on it. After the intensity of the forest, the calm of the lakeshore was the right note to leave on. And the gorillas stayed with me the whole flight home.
