Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The balloons fly at dawn, or not at all

Cappadocia's hot-air balloons launch in the still air just after sunrise, and the flight is cancelled the moment the wind picks up. Which it often does. Book your first morning, not your last, so a weather scrub leaves you a second chance. The 4am pickup is brutal and entirely worth it.

    2

    Istanbul straddles two continents

The Bosphorus splits the city between Europe and Asia, and the ferry across is the cheapest, best tour in town. Fifteen minutes, a glass of tea, the old skyline of minarets on one side and the new towers on the other. Skip the pricey dinner cruise once and just take the commuter ferry at dusk.

    3

The bazaar price is the opening bid

In the Grand Bazaar and the spice market the first number is theatre. Expect to settle around half, and walk away once to find the real price following you out the door. Carpets, lamps and gold are where it matters; for tea and spices the haggle is gentler. Cash and a smile go further than a hard line.

    When to Go

Turkey reads best in the shoulder seasons. April to early June and September to October, when Istanbul is mild, the Aegean coast is warm but not scorching, and Cappadocia's balloon mornings are clear. July and August are hot, especially on the Mediterranean coast and the central plateau, and the sites are crowded. November to March is cool and wet in Istanbul and genuinely cold and often snowy in Cappadocia. Atmospheric, low-season, but pack for it.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Istanbul — Istanbul, Turkey

Day 2. Istanbul, the old city on foot

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour started in Sultanahmet. Hagia Sophia's vast dome, the Blue Mosque across the square, the cisterns underneath. A lunch of köfte and a glass of tea in a courtyard, then the bazaar's noise. Istanbul on day two still feels like arriving.

    Istanbul01
    Cappadocia south — Cappadocia, Turkey

Day 4. Cappadocia south, Ihlara valley

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The south tour walked us down into the Ihlara gorge, a green river cut through the rock with churches carved in the cliffs. Lunch was riverside, trout off the grill. The chimneys above had been the headline; the valley floor was the quiet surprise.

    Cappadocia02
    Pamukkale — Pamukkale, Turkey

Day 7. Pamukkale, the warm white pools

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The drive in from Antalya climbs to Pamukkale, and the hillside appears white from a distance like snow that never melts. Barefoot up the terraces, warm mineral water underfoot, Hierapolis's ruins waiting at the top. We swam in the antique pool after.

    Pamukkale03
    Ephesus — Kusadasi, Turkey

Day 9. Ephesus and Şirince’s wine

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

Ephesus on the last full day. The Library facade, the great theatre, the cart-rutted marble. Then up to Şirince, a hill village of old Greek houses where they press fruit wines; we tasted half a dozen and bought the cherry. A soft end before Izmir.
