    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The Swiss Travel Pass earns its price

Buy it. The 8-day pass covers every train, boat, and most cable cars on this itinerary. Jungfraujoch and Titlis are the only big paid extras. Without it, individual tickets add up to roughly twice what the pass costs, and the convenience of skipping every ticket window is worth it on its own.

    2

Cloud is the variable, not rain

Jungfraujoch at 11,000 ft is brilliant in sun and a white-out in cloud. Same day, different hour. Move the high-altitude excursions to whichever morning the forecast looks clearest; everything else (Lucerne, Interlaken, Zurich old towns) reads fine in any weather. Check meteoblue the night before, not the week before.

    3

Fondue is for cold months; raclette is for any month

A cheese-fondue dinner in June feels like overdressing. Order raclette instead. Same Alpine cheese tradition, melted off a half-wheel against new potatoes and pickles, eaten in any temperature. Or save the fondue for one specific evening at altitude (Schynige Platte, Männlichen) where the cold does the work for it.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Switzerland runs on three windows. May through September is the Alpine summer. Every cable car running, every trail open, the lakes at their bluest. December through March is the ski season; the same villages are unrecognisable under snow. The shoulders (April, October–November) are either muddy or shut. The 9-night itinerary works best mid-summer.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Zaanse Schans — Amsterdam, Switzerland

Day 2. Zaanse Schans, the working windmills

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The day out to Zaanse Schans is the Holland of the postcards made real. A row of working windmills along the Zaan, one still sawing timber, another grinding pigment for paint. The wooden-shoe maker carves a clog in five minutes flat, and the cheese farm hands you samples at the door.

    Amsterdam01
    Paris, Switzerland

Day 4. Up the Eiffel, then the Seine

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

We rode the lift to the Eiffel summit floor in the afternoon. Paris laid out flat in every direction, the Seine threading through it. And took the river cruise at dusk, passing back under the tower just as it began its hourly five minutes of sparkle.

    Paris02
    Venice glass — Venice, Switzerland

Day 8. Venice glass, blown in the flame

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

The glass-blowing workshop sits in one of the Murano furnaces. The maker pulls a blob of molten glass from the fire and turns out a rearing horse in under two minutes, the colour shifting as it cools. After, the back canals by foot, away from the San Marco crush.

    Venice03
    Florence, Switzerland

Day 10. The leaning tower, really leaning

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

The day trip from Florence to Pisa. The tower leans far more than the photographs prepare you for, a full four degrees off true, the whole white marble drum visibly tilting over the Field of Miracles. You climb the inside stair and feel the floor tilt under your feet.
