    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The Swiss Travel Pass earns its price

Buy it. The 8-day pass covers every train, boat, and most cable cars on this itinerary. Jungfraujoch and Titlis are the only big paid extras. Without it, individual tickets add up to roughly twice what the pass costs, and the convenience of skipping every ticket window is worth it on its own.

    2

Cloud is the variable, not rain

Jungfraujoch at 11,000 ft is brilliant in sun and a white-out in cloud. Same day, different hour. Move the high-altitude excursions to whichever morning the forecast looks clearest; everything else (Lucerne, Interlaken, Zurich old towns) reads fine in any weather. Check meteoblue the night before, not the week before.

    3

Fondue is for cold months; raclette is for any month

A cheese-fondue dinner in June feels like overdressing. Order raclette instead. Same Alpine cheese tradition, melted off a half-wheel against new potatoes and pickles, eaten in any temperature. Or save the fondue for one specific evening at altitude (Schynige Platte, Männlichen) where the cold does the work for it.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Switzerland runs on three windows. May through September is the Alpine summer. Every cable car running, every trail open, the lakes at their bluest. December through March is the ski season; the same villages are unrecognisable under snow. The shoulders (April, October–November) are either muddy or shut. The 9-night itinerary works best mid-summer.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Rhine Falls — Zurich, Switzerland

Day 3. Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The Zurich days were unhurried. A day trip out to Schaffhausen for the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe by volume. The boat ran us to the rock in the middle of the torrent and we climbed the stair cut into it, the whole thing thundering on every side.

    Zurich01
    Titlis — Lucerne, Switzerland

Day 5. Titlis with the Ice Flyer

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Lucerne was the base for Titlis. The Rotair turns its slow circle up to the glacier, and the Ice Flyer chairlift carries you out low over the snow with your boots nearly grazing it. The cliff walk, a steel bridge over the drop, is not for anyone who minds heights.

    Lucerne02
Harder Kulm Interlaken — Interlaken, Switzerland

Day 9. Harder Kulm over Interlaken

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

After the Jungfraujoch we rode the funicular up to Harder Kulm, the lookout above Interlaken. The Two Lakes Bridge juts out over the edge with Lake Thun and Lake Brienz on either side, the town a thin strip of green between them and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up behind.

    Interlaken03
    Glacier — Geneva, Switzerland

Day 13. Glacier 3000 from Geneva

    Day13
    ✦ Memoir

Geneva closed the trip. A boat cruise on the lake under the Jet d’Eau, then the drive up to Glacier 3000 via the Col du Pillon. The Peak Walk bridge strings between two summits at three thousand metres, and after two weeks of mountains it still made us stop and stare.
