    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The DMZ is booked, not walked-up

The Demilitarised Zone. The border with the North, the tunnels, the observatory looking across. Can only be visited on an organised tour with passports lodged in advance, and the JSA at Panmunjom in particular needs days of lead time and can close at short notice for diplomatic reasons. Book it before you arrive, not the night before, and bring the actual passport.

    2

    The banchan keep coming

Order one main in a Korean restaurant and a constellation of little side dishes. Banchan. Arrives free, refilled without asking: kimchi, pickles, sprouts, egg. It is not an extra to pay for; it is how the meal works. Korean barbecue you cook yourself at the table, and the staff will help if you hover.

    3

The T-money card and the KTX

Buy a rechargeable T-money card from any convenience store the moment you land. It works on Seoul's superb metro and buses and saves fiddling with tickets. For the longer hops, the KTX bullet train links Seoul to Busan in under three hours. Korea's public transport is fast, clean and English-signed; you rarely need a taxi.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Korea's two best seasons are spring and autumn. April to June brings the cherry blossom and mild, clear days; September to November is the famous autumn foliage, crisp and dry. The two windows worth planning around. July and August are hot, humid and wet, with a monsoon stretch and the odd typhoon. Winter, December to February, is cold and dry, good for the ski resorts and quieter cities but bitter in the wind.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Looking across — Seoul, South Korea

Day 4. Looking across at the North

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The DMZ day, booked weeks ahead with our passports lodged. The observatory looking across the empty buffer to North Korea, the Third Tunnel dug under the line, the strange quiet of the most militarised border on earth. Sobering in a way nothing else on the trip was.

    Seoul01
    Myeongdong — Seoul, South Korea

    Day 2. Myeongdong after dark

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The shopping day ran from the department stores down to the Myeongdong street stalls. The skincare shops, the egg-bread and tteokbokki carts, the neon. Seoul at night is its own thing. We rode everywhere on the T-money card and never once needed a taxi.

    Seoul02
    Seoul, South Korea

Day 6. The tree-lined paths of Nami

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The full-day trip out to Nami Island, the little half-moon island reached by ferry, all metasequoia avenues and bicycles and autumn colour. Famous from a K-drama, packed with couples, but genuinely lovely to walk. The kind of easy day a long Seoul stay should have.

    Seoul03
    whole — Seoul, South Korea

Day 9. A whole day at Lotte World

    Day9
    ✦ Memoir

Lotte World, the giant indoor-outdoor theme park, took a full day and most of our energy. The indoor adventure under the glass dome when the weather turned, the outdoor Magic Island on its lake. After a week of palaces and the border, a day of plain fun felt earned.
