    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The MRT beats every taxi

Singapore's metro is clean, air-conditioned and reaches almost everywhere a visitor wants. Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, Little India, the airport. For a couple of dollars a ride. Tap in with a contactless card; there's no need for a separate transit pass for a short stay. In the midday heat the underground stations are also the easiest way to cross town without wilting.

    2

    Eat at the hawker centres

The best food in Singapore isn't in the hotels. It's in the hawker centres, where a Michelin-starred chicken-rice stall sits next to a laksa one for a few dollars a plate. Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, Old Airport Road are the names to know. Find a seat first and 'chope' it with a packet of tissues, the local custom, before you queue for food.

    3

    The fines are real

Singapore enforces its rules in a way that surprises first-timers. No eating or drinking on the MRT, no jaywalking, chewing gum is genuinely restricted, and littering carries a stiff fine. None of it troubles a well-behaved visitor, but don't treat the signs as decorative. The flip side is a city so clean and safe you can walk it at any hour.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so there's no real season. It's hot and humid all year, in the high twenties to low thirties, with a thunderstorm possible most afternoons. The driest, clearest stretch is February to April; the wettest is the northeast monsoon from November into January, when the rain comes heavier and the New Year and Christmas crowds peak. Indoors. Gardens by the Bay's domes, the museums, the malls. The city is built for the heat, so the weather rarely dictates the trip.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Genting Dream Cruise, Singapore

Day 5. The harbour falling away astern

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

We boarded the Genting Dream at Marina Bay Cruise Centre and the Singapore skyline slid astern as we cleared the straits. A big ship, pools and decks and a show each night. It's the holiday-within-a-holiday the children remember, the city swapped for open water.

Day 2. The Supertrees after dark

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city days came first. Gardens by the Bay closing the second one, the Supertree light show with everyone on the lawn beneath those steel-and-fern towers. The Cloud Forest dome next door with its indoor waterfall was the cool hour out of the heat.

    Singapore02
    Sentosa — Sentosa, Singapore

Day 4. Sentosa, the last land day

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Sentosa was the last day before the ship. The cable car over the harbour, a beach hour, an ice cream against the heat. We packed for the cruise that evening, the city traded for the deck the next morning.

    Sentosa03
Port Klang — Genting Dream Cruise, Singapore

Day 6. Port Klang, a day ashore

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The cruise called at Port Klang, the gateway to Kuala Lumpur. For a day ashore before turning back for Singapore. A short sailing rather than a long one, which suited a trip that was really about the city with the sea as a coda.
