    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The MRT beats every taxi

Singapore's metro is clean, air-conditioned and reaches almost everywhere a visitor wants. Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, Little India, the airport. For a couple of dollars a ride. Tap in with a contactless card; there's no need for a separate transit pass for a short stay. In the midday heat the underground stations are also the easiest way to cross town without wilting.

    2

    Eat at the hawker centres

The best food in Singapore isn't in the hotels. It's in the hawker centres, where a Michelin-starred chicken-rice stall sits next to a laksa one for a few dollars a plate. Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, Old Airport Road are the names to know. Find a seat first and 'chope' it with a packet of tissues, the local custom, before you queue for food.

    3

    The fines are real

Singapore enforces its rules in a way that surprises first-timers. No eating or drinking on the MRT, no jaywalking, chewing gum is genuinely restricted, and littering carries a stiff fine. None of it troubles a well-behaved visitor, but don't treat the signs as decorative. The flip side is a city so clean and safe you can walk it at any hour.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so there's no real season. It's hot and humid all year, in the high twenties to low thirties, with a thunderstorm possible most afternoons. The driest, clearest stretch is February to April; the wettest is the northeast monsoon from November into January, when the rain comes heavier and the New Year and Christmas crowds peak. Indoors. Gardens by the Bay's domes, the museums, the malls. The city is built for the heat, so the weather rarely dictates the trip.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Singapore

Day 1. The tram through the dark zoo

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The Night Safari runs the world's first nocturnal zoo after dark. A tram glides through unfenced-looking habitats lit low, and the animals that sleep all day are up and moving. We landed, dropped the bags, and went straight there; it's the right first night, before the jet lag lands.

    Singapore01
    Wings — Sentosa, Singapore

Day 3. Wings of Time over the sea

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Sentosa's evening show, Wings of Time, plays out over the open water off the beach. Water jets, light and fire set to a story, the crowd on the sand. We'd done Madame Tussauds and the cable car earlier; the show was the close of the island day.

    Sentosa02
    Universal — Sentosa, Singapore

Day 4. Universal, the duelling coasters

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Universal Studios is compact. We did the big rides in a day, the duelling Battlestar coasters twice. The monorail across from the city is quick, and we were back over the harbour as the towers lit for the evening.

    Sentosa03
    Singapore

Day 2. The merlion, the bay behind

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour took in the merlion at the bay, the colonial quarter of white shophouses, Chinatown and Little India. Lunch was chicken rice at a hawker stall. A few dollars, and the dish the whole city argues about.
