    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The typhoon calendar

The wet season runs roughly June to November, and that is also when typhoons come through. Most often July to October. They rarely ruin a whole trip, but a storm can ground island flights for a day or two. If your plan hops between islands, build in a buffer day, and don't book the tightest connections in the back half of the year.

    2

    7,000 islands, mostly by plane

The Philippines is an archipelago, and getting between the big destinations almost always means a domestic flight, not a road or ferry. Manila's airport is the hub and it can be slow. Leave generous time for transfers. A trip that looks like a short hop on the map is often a flight back through the capital.

    3

    English everywhere, and the jeepney

English is widely spoken, which makes the Philippines one of the easiest countries in Asia to travel in. In the cities the jeepney. The painted ex-army jeep turned shared bus. Is the local ride, cheap and chaotic; fun once, but for getting around on a schedule, the ride-hailing apps are simpler.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Philippines has two seasons. The dry season, December to April, is the time to go. Sunny, calm seas, the islands at their best, with the cooler end around December to February. May is the hot run-up to the rains. The wet season, June to November, brings the southwest monsoon and the typhoons, heaviest July to October; it is greener and quieter, but island-hopping gets unreliable, so plan with buffer days if you travel then.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Inside — Manila, Philippines

Day 2. Inside the walls of Intramuros

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour gave the morning to Intramuros, the old Spanish walled town. Fort Santiago, San Agustin church that survived every earthquake and war, the cobbles and the calesa horse-carts. Manila's history is layered and hard, and the walls hold a lot of it.

    Manila01
    Manila Bay — Manila, Philippines

Day 1. Sunset over Manila Bay

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

First evening, the famous Manila Bay sunset along the baywalk. The sky going orange over the water and the ships at anchor. Then dinner in Makati, the modern side of the city, glass towers and good food. The two Manilas in one day.

    Manila02
    Manila, Philippines

Day 3. Lunch in the waterfall

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Villa Escudero, a couple of hours out. A working coconut plantation where lunch is served at tables set in the river, your feet in the shallows below a small dam-waterfall. Touristy, sure, but the rice-paddy carabao cart ride and the food made it the day everyone remembered.

    Manila03
    Manila, Philippines

Day 4. Last coffee in Makati

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

A slow last morning in Makati before the airport. Good coffee, the malls already humming, the warmth and the easy English that make the Philippines such a soft landing in Asia. Three nights was a city teaser; it left me wanting the islands.
