    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Diving needs more days than you think

Open Water certification is three full days, not an afternoon. If you actually want to dive. Not just snorkel. Extend Havelock by two nights or you will only get the 20-minute intro dives.

    2

Ferries are at the mercy of the sea, even off-season

Inter-island ferries (Port Blair ↔ Havelock ↔ Neil) get cancelled in choppy weather. November to April is reliable, but the premium private ferries (Makruzz, Green Ocean) cost 3× the government boats and sell out three weeks ahead in peak season. Book early or risk a missed connection.

    3

The Sound & Light show is the obvious evening, there are better ones

Cellular Jail's nightly Sound & Light brings every Port Blair tourist into the same courtyard. A less-trafficked alternative: a sunset walking tour of Aberdeen Bazaar with a guide whose grandfather was actually held in the jail. Tibro can arrange it.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Cellular Jail — Port Blair, India

Day 1. Cellular Jail at dusk, light-and-sound

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The Cellular Jail does a light-and-sound show at seven, and you sit in the courtyard the political prisoners used to cross. The peepal tree they planted is still there, and the narrator names men whose names are on streets in cities you've lived in. It is not a comfortable evening. That is the point.

    Port Blair01
    Radhanagar Beach — Havelock, India

Day 2. Radhanagar Beach, west-facing sundown

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Radhanagar runs west, which most Indian beaches don't, so the sun sets straight into the sea instead of behind a coconut grove. The sand is fine and white enough to squeak when you walk on it. We stayed until the colour drained out of the water, then walked back in the half-dark.

    Havelock02
    Elephant Beach — Havelock, India

Day 3. Elephant Beach, the reef ten metres out

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Elephant Beach is reached by speedboat through a mangrove creek, and the reef starts about ten metres off the shore. We saw parrotfish, a small grouper, and what the guide said was a juvenile reef shark. Too fast to tell. The water is warm and shallow and you can stand up if you need to.

    Havelock03
Natural bridge — Neil Island, India

Day 4. Natural bridge at low tide, Neil Island

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The natural rock bridge on Neil's western edge only shows itself at low tide, and the guides time the visit accordingly. You walk out across exposed coral. Wear closed shoes. And the arch is bigger than the photos suggest. We had it almost to ourselves for twenty minutes before the next boat unloaded.
