    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    When to Go

India has three windows for travel. October–March is the cool/dry season. The headline window, when most of the subcontinent is at its most welcoming. April–June is hot and increasingly dangerous in the north plains. July–September is the southwest monsoon. Beautiful for Kerala Ayurveda lovers, hard for sightseeing. This Kerala tour sits squarely in the post-monsoon clear window.

Kerala has two monsoons (southwest Jun–Aug heavy; northeast Oct–Nov a brief secondary). The Winters 25-26 departure window avoids both. Ayurveda treatments traditionally peak with the monsoon, but the tour itinerary itself works best in dry season.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Acclimatisation — Leh, India

Day 1. Acclimatisation, the slow day

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

Day one in Leh is rest day by protocol. The hotel staff bring oxygen if needed and ginger tea on the hour. The rule from the army doctors is two litres of water before sundown and no exertion. The first walk on day two will feel like jogging at sea level.

    Leh01
    Hunder — Nubra, India

Day 3. Hunder, the cold-desert dunes

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Hunder sits at 10,000 feet and has a working dune system fed by the Shyok river. Fine grey sand, not Rajasthan saffron. The double-humped Bactrian camels were left behind by the Silk Route caravans; a short ride goes for 400 rupees and is worth it for the photograph.

    Nubra02
    Turtuk — Turtuk, India

Day 4. Turtuk, last village before the border

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Turtuk was opened to tourists in 2010. The village sits eight kilometres before the LoC and the Baltistan culture here is closer to Pakistan than Ladakh. The apricot trees are everywhere and the locals serve buckwheat noodles called gyathuk. The army permission is checked at the gate.

    Turtuk03
    Diskit Monastery — Nubra, India

Day 5. Diskit Monastery, the giant Maitreya

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Diskit Monastery is the oldest in Nubra. 14th century, built on a ridge above the valley floor. The 32-metre standing Maitreya Buddha at the front, painted in primary colours, was finished in 2010. The view from its base takes in the whole Hunder dune field.
