    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Wildebeest crossing season

Late July through September is when the herds cross the Mara River. Most tours skip the prime crossing windows by camping too far upstream. Tibro's Mara nights are timed for it. If you can travel in August, do.

    2

    Altitude on Day One

Nairobi sits at 1,795 metres. Coming from Mumbai or Delhi, expect a slightly thin head for 24 hours and drink more water than feels normal. Skip the Tusker your first night; pick it up at the Mara.

    3

    Fly the Mara transfer

The Nairobi-to-Mara road is five hours of corrugated dirt. The light aircraft from Wilson Airport does it in fifty minutes for around USD 250 each way. Worth every shilling unless you specifically want to see rural Kenya pass the window.

    When to Go

Kenya runs on two dry seasons and two rain seasons. June to October is the long dry. Golden grass, wildebeest crossings, the iconic safari window. January to February is a quieter shoulder with clear skies and far fewer vehicles. The long rains (March-May) are when most camps close.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 2. First morning on the Mara

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

We landed in Nairobi and drove straight to the Mara, and the first afternoon game drive turned up a leopard draped over a sausage-tree branch. The driver said that was beginner's luck and we'd not see another. He was right.

    Masai Mara01
    Masai Mara, Kenya

Day 3. The Mara River bank

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

A full day in the reserve took us down to the Mara River where the crossings happen. No herd that day, but the crocodiles lay like logs and a pod of hippo grunted in the brown water. We had a bush breakfast tailgate on the open plain.

    Masai Mara02
    Serengeti, Kenya

Day 4. Over the border to Serengeti

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The drive south crosses into Tanzania and the grass simply continues. There's no fence, only the line on the map. The Serengeti opened up flatter and wider, and by late afternoon we were among the wildebeest strung out to the horizon.

    Serengeti03
    Serengeti, Kenya

Day 5. Dusk on the Serengeti

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The light goes fast on the equator. We sat with sundowners on a kopje while the sky went orange, and a hyena whooped somewhere below the rocks. Driving back to camp in the dark, the headlamps caught a dozen pairs of eyes.
