    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The Octopus card runs everything

One stored-value card taps you onto the MTR, the trams, the Star Ferry and into the convenience stores. Buy one at the airport and top it up. It saves fumbling for change in a city that does not slow down for you.

    2

Up the Peak before the haze

Victoria Peak is the view, but go early or at dusk. The midday haze flattens it and the Peak Tram queue runs long by mid-morning. The clearest air is usually the day after a winter cold front blows through.

    3

    Macau is a separate crossing

The ferry to Macau takes about an hour and it is a full immigration crossing. Bring your passport. Macau runs its own currency, the pataca, though Hong Kong dollars are taken there at par, so you rarely need to change money.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Hong Kong is at its best from October to December. Dry, clear and mild, with the harbour haze lifting and the nights cool enough for a jacket. March and April are pleasant if humid. May to September is hot, sticky and the typhoon season, when a signal-8 warning can shut the city for a day. January and February are cool and often grey, but never cold.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Lights across — Hong Kong

Day 1. Lights across the harbour

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The first night we caught the Symphony of Lights from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade. The whole Hong Kong Island skyline firing lasers across the water at eight sharp. Then the Star Ferry back across in the dark.

    Hong Kong01
    Dim sum — Hong Kong

Day 2. Dim sum off the trolley

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

A leisure day went mostly to eating. Dim sum pushed past on trolleys in a clattering tea house, the ladies-market haggling in Mong Kok, an egg tart from a bakery queue. The city is best when you let it set the pace.

    Hong Kong02
    Hong Kong

Day 4. The tram up the Peak

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Peak Tram hauled us up at an angle that put the skyscrapers on a lean, and the top gave the whole harbour at once. Kowloon across the water, the green hills behind, the haze just thin enough that afternoon.

    Hong Kong03
    Hong Kong

Day 5. A day at Disneyland

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Disneyland out on Lantau was the children's day. Smaller than the others and easier for it, the castle, the parade, and the MTR ride out with the Mickey-shaped windows that they noticed before I did.
