    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Bikes own the city

In Amsterdam the cyclists, not the cars, are the thing to watch. The red-asphalt lanes are a road, not a footpath, and a tourist drifting into one gets a furious bell at best. Look both ways for bikes before you ever look for traffic.

    2

    Everything books weeks ahead

The Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and Keukenhof all run on timed tickets that sell out weeks in advance online. Walk-up is rarely an option. Book the moment your dates are fixed, not when you land.

    3

    The tulip window is narrow

Keukenhof and the bulb fields only bloom from roughly mid-March to mid-May; a week either side and the famous colour is just flat green fields. If the tulips are the reason you're coming, the dates aren't negotiable.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Netherlands is at its best from April to October. The tulip fields and Keukenhof peak from mid-April to mid-May; June to August brings the long, mild days and the café terraces along the canals; spring and early autumn are quieter and still pleasant. November to February is short, grey and cold. Amsterdam is atmospheric in the mist, but the bulb fields are bare and the light is gone by mid-afternoon.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Lucerne, Netherlands

Day 2. The Ice Flyer over Titlis

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The rotating cable car turned us up Mount Titlis into the cloud, and the Ice Flyer chair carried us out over the crevasses with our feet hanging above the glacier. A hard, bright start before the country softened northward.

    Lucerne01
    Top — Interlaken, Netherlands

    Day 4. Top of Europe

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Eiger Express and the cog railway took us up to Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, the Aletsch glacier running off below and snow in the middle of summer. Interlaken sat green between its two lakes when we came down.

    Interlaken02
    Paris, Netherlands

Day 6. The Seine after dark

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Paris gave us the Eiffel Tower's summit floor and then a Seine cruise as the lights came on, the bridges sliding past and the tower throwing its hourly sparkle out over the river.

    Paris03
    Windmills — Amsterdam, Netherlands

Day 8. Windmills at Zaanse Schans

    Day8
    ✦ Memoir

Zaanse Schans closed it. Working windmills along the river, the clog-maker and the cheese farm, the green wooden houses. The lowlands flat and watery after a week of mountains.
