    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Don't come in August

Paris empties out in August. The Parisians decamp south and the city that stays open is the tourist crust, with half the good bistros shuttered for les vacances and the heat sitting heavy on the stone. Late April to June, or September into October, gives you the city the locals actually live in. The Riviera is the inverse: August is its peak and its most crowded.

    2

    The TGV beats the airport

France's high-speed trains run city-centre to city-centre at 300 km/h. Paris to Lyon in two hours, Paris to Avignon in under three. And you skip the airport entirely. Book the TGV well ahead; the prix libre fares climb steeply close to the day. A first-class seat is a small premium for a much quieter carriage.

    3

    Lunch is the long meal

The French eat lunch slowly and dinner late. Kitchens often don't reopen until 7.30pm, and turning up at six gets you a closed door or a tourist menu. Make lunch your big meal, especially outside Paris where the midday formule is the day's best value. And the café terrace is for the apéro hour, around six, not for hurrying.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

France works April to October, but the shoulders are the sweet spot. Spring. April into June. Brings the gardens out and the crowds haven't arrived; September and October give you the harvest, warm stone and thinned-out queues. July and August are hot and busy: Paris half-shuts for the holidays while the Riviera fills up. November to March is cool and grey in the north, though the Alps come into their own and Provence stays mild.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Paris — Paris, France

Day 2. Paris from the second floor

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The trip opened in Paris with the Seine cruise and a guided climb up the Eiffel. The guide pointed out the line of the old city against the Haussmann sprawl. We saved Switzerland and Italy for the rest, but Paris is where you find your feet.

    Paris01
    Jungfraujoch — Zurich, France

Day 6. Jungfraujoch on the Eiger Express

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

From the Swiss base we took the Eiger Express up to the Jungfraujoch. The Top of Europe, the highest railway station on the continent, the Aletsch glacier running away below the terrace. The day before had been Titlis with its Ice Flyer chair over the crevasses.

    Zurich02
    gondola through — Venice, France

Day 7. A gondola through the back canals

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

Venice came after the mountains. The gondola took us off the Grand Canal into the narrow back rii where the water laps the doorsteps and the gondolier calls the corners. The Murano, Burano and Torcello islands the next day were the quieter, more coloured version of the lagoon.

    Venice03
    Rome, France

Day 10. The Colosseum, last stop

    Day10
    ✦ Memoir

Rome closed the trip. The hop-on bus looped the ancient core and we went into the Colosseum, the arena floor part-rebuilt so you can read the scale of it. After three countries in ten days, standing in the oldest of them felt like the right place to stop.
