Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, and almost all of it is horizon. We route the green corner around Almaty. The old apple city under the Tien Shan; the Charyn Canyon's red walls a day east; the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes turquoise in the mountains; the steppe opening flat in every direction. One Almaty, one canyon, two lakes, one ski-mountain. Best from May to September, before the snow closes the passes.
Six plates from the Almaty corner. The city under the peaks, the Charyn Canyon, a turquoise mountain lake, the open steppe, Zenkov's cathedral, and the Shymbulak slopes.
Tibro has routed the Almaty corner of Kazakhstan since 2022. City mornings under the peaks, canyon days east, and the turquoise-lake drives that travellers ask to repeat.
We work with an Almaty-based partner who handles the mountain and canyon day-trips and the drivers who know the lake roads.
One route is what we maintain today; more sit in the studio's drafts. We base in Almaty and run the canyon, the lakes, and the mountains as day journeys, because the city is the easiest place to come home to.
Warmly,
The Tibro studio , Mumbai, Almaty (partner)
Two questions decide a Kazakhstan trip: how many nights in Almaty, and whether to add the longer Kolsai-and-Kaindy lakes loop to the canyon day.
