Preface, on a country that arrives in four different versions

Japan is four countries on the same archipelago, and the four arrive in turn. The Kyoto we send you to in April, when the cherry blossom is two weeks old and falling, is not the Kyoto we send a different traveller to in November, when the maple under the same temple eaves is red. So we ask the season before we ask the itinerary. The order matters more than visitors usually expect.

    Colophon

    A small note
    on how we work.

Tibro has been routing Japan since 2003, when our first traveller asked us for two weeks in October and we admitted that we needed to find a partner in Tokyo before we said yes.

Our Tokyo partner studio is run by Hiroko, who came to us through a former Japan-wing client and has worked with us continuously since 2009. Her studio is six people and an apartment in Nakano, with a wall of timetable maps that they keep updated quarterly.

We hold ryokan rooms on six-month standing arrangements for Kanazawa, Hakone, Kurokawa, and Kyoto's two best-named houses. We will name the houses when you write to us.

Thirteen routes is the current shape. We add a route when Hiroko has slept in the new place and edited the days; we have not added a route in the last eight months.

    Tokaido, twelve nights, November 2024

The trip was the timetable. Hiroko's studio had reserved Green Car seats for every leg, ryokan check-ins synced to train arrivals down to the quarter-hour, and a hand-written note in our Kyoto room explaining the seven-minute walk to Eikan-dō for the maples at the right hour. We have not been on a more competently-routed trip in ten years.

    Sakura, ten nights, April 2025

The cherry blossom was two weeks old when we arrived and we panicked; Hiroko did not. She moved our Kyoto nights forward by two days at no charge and we got the falling petals at the Philosopher's Path for an hour at six in the morning, alone. The country went on. It was the trip.

Hokkaido yuki, nine nights, February 2025

We came for the snow and not for the food and the food turned out to be the trip. Yufuin for two nights was the studio's idea and the right one. A ryokan whose owner brought hot sake to our outdoor bath at the moment the snow began to fall. Tibro and Hiroko had quietly briefed the owner about my back; the bath was the only one with a low step.

    Tell us when, not where.
    We will pick the line.

Send the season first, sakura, momiji, yuki. And the rest follows. Hiroko in Tokyo will write back inside the working day with which line and which ryokan.

    . write back.
