    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

India has three windows for travel. October–March is the cool/dry season. The headline window, when most of the subcontinent is at its most welcoming. April–June is hot and increasingly dangerous in the north plains. July–September is the southwest monsoon. Beautiful for Kerala Ayurveda lovers, hard for sightseeing. This Kerala tour sits squarely in the post-monsoon clear window.

Kerala has two monsoons (southwest Jun–Aug heavy; northeast Oct–Nov a brief secondary). The Winters 25-26 departure window avoids both. Ayurveda treatments traditionally peak with the monsoon, but the tour itinerary itself works best in dry season.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Boarding — Jaipur, India

Day 1. Boarding at Delhi cantonment, the welcome

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The Deccan Odyssey leaves from Delhi Cantonment, not New Delhi station, and the boarding is small. A red carpet, a tilak, and the suite numbers handed out by the train manager. We were in cabin 14. The double-bed suites are at the rear; the train pulls out of the city around six.

    Jaipur01
    Amber — Jaipur, India

Day 2. Amber from the elephant path

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Jaipur stop is long enough for Amber and the City Palace, and the train arranges its own jeeps. Amber is best from across Maota lake. The reflection is the photo. We skipped the elephants and walked up. The Sheesh Mahal mirror-work is small, kept dark, and the guide lights one match to show you what it does.

    Jaipur02
    Ranthambore Zone — Jaipur, India

Day 3. Ranthambore Zone 3, the tigress at the lake

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Zone 3 is the most photographed zone. Padam Talab and the old hunting pavilion where the Maharaja used to sit. The tigress we saw was Riddhi, fourth-generation of T-19. She walked the bund road in front of us for about ninety seconds, then disappeared into the lantana. Nobody breathed.

    Jaipur03
    Taj — Agra, India

Day 4. Taj at first light, the south gate

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Taj is best from the south gate at first light, before the busloads arrive. The train brings you in early and the guides know the trick. Straight through the front courtyard while the mosque is still in shadow. We had the central platform almost to ourselves for ten minutes. The marble is cooler than you think it will be.
