    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The Great Firewall, and the workaround

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked inside China. Set up a working VPN before you fly. It is much harder to install one once you are there. And download offline maps. WeChat is the app that runs everything locally, from messaging to paying; it is worth setting up in advance with a linked card.

    2

    Phones pay, not cards

China runs almost cashless, and not on Visa. On Alipay and WeChat Pay QR codes. Foreign cards now link to both, but set it up before the trip; many small vendors, taxis and even temples take nothing else. Carry a little cash as backup, but expect to pay for most things by scanning a code on your phone.

    3

    Which stretch of the Wall

The Great Wall near Beijing has several restored sections. Badaling is closest and the most crowded; Mutianyu, a little further, has a cable car up, a toboggan down, and far more breathing room. Go early to either. The tour buses arrive mid-morning. And wear real shoes, the steps are steep and uneven.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

For the Beijing–Shanghai axis, spring and autumn are the windows. April to May and September to October bring mild, clearer days and the parks at their best (autumn is often the crispest, least humid stretch). Summer, June to August, is hot, humid and the busy domestic-travel season, with crowds at every major sight. Winter, November to March, is cold and dry in the north, grey and damp in Shanghai, but quiet. China is vast, so a southern or western route shifts these windows.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Beijing, China

Day 2. The Wall at Mutianyu

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

We took the cable car up to the Mutianyu wall and walked the ramparts as they ran off over the green hills, fewer crowds than Badaling and the view earning every step. Then the Summer Palace and its lake in the afternoon. And yes, we took the toboggan back down the Wall.

    Beijing01
    Beijing, China

Day 3. The scale of the Forbidden City

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Tiananmen Square is vast in a way photos don't carry, and then through the gate into the Forbidden City. Courtyard after courtyard of the same imperial yellow-and-red, half a thousand years of emperors. It took the whole morning and we still didn't see it all.

    Beijing02
    Shanghai, China

    Day 4. 300 km/h to Shanghai

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The bullet train south. Smooth, silent, the speed counter ticking past 300, the country flashing by. China's high-speed network is the easy way to cross it. By evening we were on the Bund, the old banks at our back and Pudong's towers lit up across the river.

    Shanghai03
    Jade Buddha — Shanghai, China

Day 5. Jade Buddha, then the heights

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Shanghai's contrasts in a day. The quiet of the Jade Buddha Temple in the morning, incense and gilt, then up the Jinmao Tower in the afternoon for the city laid out below. The old and the brand-new of China, a few miles and a century apart.
