    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

Dry season is the high season

Botswana's best game viewing runs through the dry winter, May to September. The bush thins, the waterholes shrink, and animals crowd the remaining water where you can find them. The green season (Nov-Mar) is lush and full of birds and newborns, but the grass is high and sightings harder; for big-game density, go in the dry.

    2

The Delta is best by water

The Okavango is a flood, not a reserve. The way to feel it is from a mokoro, the local dugout canoe, poled silently through the reed channels at water level. Ask your camp for a morning mokoro outing; the quiet brings you close to lechwe, frogs and elephant in a way no vehicle can.

    3

    Chobe's river runs on elephants

Chobe holds one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, and the river drive at dusk is when they come down to drink and cross in family lines. Take the boat safari as well as the vehicle one. Seeing the herds from the water, with hippo and buffalo alongside, is the park at its finest.

    When to Go

Botswana sits below the equator, so the seasons run opposite to the north. The dry winter, May to September, is the safari peak. Cool nights, thinning bush and animals concentrated at the water. October is hot and dry, building to the rains. November to March is the green season: hot, humid, dramatic afternoon storms, lush grass, newborn game and superb birding, but denser cover and harder big-game sightings.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Victoria Falls, Botswana

Day 2. The smoke that thunders

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Victoria Falls came at us as sound before sight. A wall of spray rising hundreds of feet, the Zambezi falling off the edge of the world. We walked the rim soaked through and grinning, rainbows hanging in the mist.

    Victoria Falls01
Elephants crossing — Chobe National Park, Botswana

Day 3. Elephants crossing at dusk

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The boat safari on the Chobe river caught the herds coming down to drink at dusk, elephants crossing in family lines, hippo surfacing alongside. We drifted close enough to hear them tearing at the reeds.

    Chobe National Park02
Poled silent through — Okavango Delta, Botswana

Day 5. Poled silent through the reeds

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

A mokoro took us through the Okavango at water level, the poler pushing us silent between the reeds, lechwe watching from the banks. The Delta is a flood that never reaches the sea, and from the canoe you feel it.

    Lion — Okavango Delta, Botswana

Day 6. Lion in the long gold grass

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The morning game drive in the Delta found a pride flat out in the gold grass, full from a kill, barely lifting their heads. The guide cut the engine and we sat in the silence, close enough to hear them breathe.
