    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    When to Go

India has three windows for travel. October–March is the cool/dry season. The headline window, when most of the subcontinent is at its most welcoming. April–June is hot and increasingly dangerous in the north plains. July–September is the southwest monsoon. Beautiful for Kerala Ayurveda lovers, hard for sightseeing. This Kerala tour sits squarely in the post-monsoon clear window.

Kerala has two monsoons (southwest Jun–Aug heavy; northeast Oct–Nov a brief secondary). The Winters 25-26 departure window avoids both. Ayurveda treatments traditionally peak with the monsoon, but the tour itinerary itself works best in dry season.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Dal Lake — Srinagar, India

Day 1. Dal Lake at dawn, the kingfishers

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The shikara at dawn is quiet. Most tourists go at four in the afternoon and skip the morning. We left the houseboat just before sunrise and the lotus stems were still folded shut. Kingfishers worked the floating gardens. The boatman didn't say much for the first hour, which was the right call.

    Srinagar01
    Sonmarg — Sonmarg, India

Day 2. Sonmarg, the road of gold at noon

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Sonmarg means meadow of gold. For the wildflowers, which you won't see in winter. But the deep snow has its own version of the name. The Thajiwas glacier road is closed past a certain point, but the local horsemen take you partway up on Kashmiri ponies. Our pony was named Champa and she preferred the cleared track.

    Sonmarg02
    Aru valley — Pahalgam, India

Day 4. Aru valley, the chinars along the Lidder

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Aru valley road from Pahalgam is open in clear weather and the chinar trees along the Lidder are bare in winter. Black against the snow. We walked about three kilometres up the road and the wood smoke from a shepherd's hut was the only sign of anyone. The cold makes the air taste mineral.

    Pahalgam03
Gulmarg phase two — Gulmarg, India

Day 5. Gulmarg phase two, fresh powder

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The Gulmarg gondola has two phases. The second runs up to almost 4,000 metres and the air thins enough that you feel it. We were there in February. The skiers were lining up for fresh powder and the rest of us stood in the cold, taking it in. The chai at the top is hot enough to need both gloves.
