    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The sarong is not optional

Every Balinese temple, Uluwatu, Besakih, Lempuyang. Requires a sarong tied at the waist and a sash, men included. The big sites lend them at the gate, but the loaner queue eats your time and the cloth is often damp. Buy your own for a few dollars in any market and you walk straight in.

    2

    Mind the canang sari

Those little palm-leaf trays of flowers and rice on the pavement and the dashboards are daily offerings, laid out fresh each morning. Step around them, never over or on them. The smouldering incense stick beside one means it was placed minutes ago. The family is mid-prayer somewhere close.

    3

    The Lempuyang gate reflection

The 'Gates of Heaven' mirror shot at Pura Lempuyang is an illusion. A man holds a phone with a mirror under the lens; there is no real lake. The queue can run two or three hours by mid-morning. Arrive before 8am or skip it; the temple itself, high on Mount Lempuyang, is worth the climb regardless.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Bali runs on two seasons, not four. The dry season, April to October, is the window. Sunny days, low humidity, the surf clean on the west coast; July and August are the busy, breezy peak. The wet season, November to March, brings warm afternoon downpours that clear as fast as they come, and the rice terraces at their greenest. Avoid the Nyepi day of silence in March, when the whole island. Airport included. Shuts down for 24 hours.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Reef snorkel — Seminyak, Indonesia

Day 2. Reef snorkel off the west boat

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The West One day trip ran us out to the quieter reefs off the far coast. Snorkelling where the day boats don't reach, lunch on deck, the water that flat tropical blue. Back to Seminyak salt-stiff and starving by mid-afternoon.

    Seminyak01
    Bali, Indonesia

Day 3. The monkeys run the forest

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Ubud village in the morning, then the Monkey Forest, where the macaques genuinely run the place. Pockets zipped, sunglasses off. We finished at Tanah Lot for the sunset behind the sea temple, the tide just turning to cut it off.

    Bali02
    Batur — Bali, Indonesia

Day 4. Up Batur before the heat

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Mount Batur trek starts in the dark to summit for sunrise over the caldera, the steam rising off the cones below. Eggs cooked in the volcanic vents at the top. Down past the Tegalalang terraces and the Tegenungan falls, legs gone by the afternoon.

    Bali03
    GWK — Kuta, Indonesia

Day 6. GWK, the giant Garuda

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The last full day was the GWK culture park. The colossal Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue you can see from half the island. And Uluwatu's clifftop temple for one more Kecak as the sun went down over the sea.
