    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The sarong is not optional

Every Balinese temple, Uluwatu, Besakih, Lempuyang. Requires a sarong tied at the waist and a sash, men included. The big sites lend them at the gate, but the loaner queue eats your time and the cloth is often damp. Buy your own for a few dollars in any market and you walk straight in.

    2

    Mind the canang sari

Those little palm-leaf trays of flowers and rice on the pavement and the dashboards are daily offerings, laid out fresh each morning. Step around them, never over or on them. The smouldering incense stick beside one means it was placed minutes ago. The family is mid-prayer somewhere close.

    3

    The Lempuyang gate reflection

The 'Gates of Heaven' mirror shot at Pura Lempuyang is an illusion. A man holds a phone with a mirror under the lens; there is no real lake. The queue can run two or three hours by mid-morning. Arrive before 8am or skip it; the temple itself, high on Mount Lempuyang, is worth the climb regardless.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

Bali runs on two seasons, not four. The dry season, April to October, is the window. Sunny days, low humidity, the surf clean on the west coast; July and August are the busy, breezy peak. The wet season, November to March, brings warm afternoon downpours that clear as fast as they come, and the rice terraces at their greenest. Avoid the Nyepi day of silence in March, when the whole island. Airport included. Shuts down for 24 hours.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Uluwatu — Bali, Indonesia

Day 2. Uluwatu, the cliff at dusk

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Uluwatu hangs over the surf on its limestone cliff, and the half-day works best in the late light when the Kecak dance starts. A hundred men chanting in a ring of fire, the sun dropping behind them. The macaques work the crowd. They took a woman's earring two seats along.

    Bali, Indonesia

Day 4. The swing, then Tanah Lot

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Morning on the Ubud swing. Out over a jungle ravine, the rice falling away green below. Then west to Tanah Lot for the sunset behind the sea temple. Two of the island's set-pieces in a single, very full day.

    Bali02
    Bali, Indonesia

Day 5. The Bounty out of Benoa

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The Bounty dinner cruise is a tall-ship replica that sails out of Benoa as the light goes. Buffet, a band, the south-coast lights coming up behind. Touristy and we knew it, but the sunset over the water did exactly what it was supposed to.

    Bali03
    Bali, Indonesia

Day 6. Coffee at Kintamani, volcano view

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

Last full day climbed up to Kintamani, cool at altitude, with Mount Batur and its lake spread out across the caldera. The coffee plantation let us taste the luwak coffee and a tray of teas, then down past Tegalalang's stepped terraces and the Tegenungan falls.
