Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

The balloons fly at dawn, or not at all

Cappadocia's hot-air balloons launch in the still air just after sunrise, and the flight is cancelled the moment the wind picks up. Which it often does. Book your first morning, not your last, so a weather scrub leaves you a second chance. The 4am pickup is brutal and entirely worth it.

    2

    Istanbul straddles two continents

The Bosphorus splits the city between Europe and Asia, and the ferry across is the cheapest, best tour in town. Fifteen minutes, a glass of tea, the old skyline of minarets on one side and the new towers on the other. Skip the pricey dinner cruise once and just take the commuter ferry at dusk.

    3

The bazaar price is the opening bid

In the Grand Bazaar and the spice market the first number is theatre. Expect to settle around half, and walk away once to find the real price following you out the door. Carpets, lamps and gold are where it matters; for tea and spices the haggle is gentler. Cash and a smile go further than a hard line.

    When to Go

Turkey reads best in the shoulder seasons. April to early June and September to October, when Istanbul is mild, the Aegean coast is warm but not scorching, and Cappadocia's balloon mornings are clear. July and August are hot, especially on the Mediterranean coast and the central plateau, and the sites are crowded. November to March is cool and wet in Istanbul and genuinely cold and often snowy in Cappadocia. Atmospheric, low-season, but pack for it.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Famous rocky formations with holes and rough surface located in ancient Cappadocia town near hilly terrain against blue sky in Turkey

Day 4. The balloon morning over Göreme

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The balloon went up at first light over Göreme, the burner roaring then cutting to silence as we drifted level with the chimneys. The north tour after. Open-air churches, the underground city. Felt earthbound by comparison.

    Cappadocia01
Explore an iconic Roman arch with classic columns in an urban cityscape

Day 5. Down to the Mediterranean coast

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The drive south out of Cappadocia drops through the Taurus mountains to the coast, and the air changes. Pine, then sea. Antalya's old harbour at dusk, with the Roman gate and the boats coming in, is the soft landing the trip needed.

    Antalya02
Explore the ancient ruins of Side in Antalya

Day 6. The cable car above Antalya

    Day6
    ✦ Memoir

The cable car up Tünektepe gives you the whole bay. The Beydağları still snow-capped behind the city, the Mediterranean flat and blue below. The Düden waterfalls dropping straight into the sea are the other half of the afternoon.

    Antalya03
Panoramic view of the Golden Horn waterway and cityscape in Istanbul, Turkey

Day 7. Pamukkale, the white terraces

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

Pamukkale is unreal in person. Terraces of white travertine filled with warm turquoise pools, the calcium so bright you squint. You walk it barefoot. Hierapolis's ruins sit right above, and you can swim among fallen columns in the old spring.
