    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The MRT beats every taxi

Singapore's metro is clean, air-conditioned and reaches almost everywhere a visitor wants. Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, Little India, the airport. For a couple of dollars a ride. Tap in with a contactless card; there's no need for a separate transit pass for a short stay. In the midday heat the underground stations are also the easiest way to cross town without wilting.

    2

    Eat at the hawker centres

The best food in Singapore isn't in the hotels. It's in the hawker centres, where a Michelin-starred chicken-rice stall sits next to a laksa one for a few dollars a plate. Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, Old Airport Road are the names to know. Find a seat first and 'chope' it with a packet of tissues, the local custom, before you queue for food.

    3

    The fines are real

Singapore enforces its rules in a way that surprises first-timers. No eating or drinking on the MRT, no jaywalking, chewing gum is genuinely restricted, and littering carries a stiff fine. None of it troubles a well-behaved visitor, but don't treat the signs as decorative. The flip side is a city so clean and safe you can walk it at any hour.

    When to Go

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so there's no real season. It's hot and humid all year, in the high twenties to low thirties, with a thunderstorm possible most afternoons. The driest, clearest stretch is February to April; the wettest is the northeast monsoon from November into January, when the rain comes heavier and the New Year and Christmas crowds peak. Indoors. Gardens by the Bay's domes, the museums, the malls. The city is built for the heat, so the weather rarely dictates the trip.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Magnificent indoor waterfall surrounded by tropical greenery inside Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore

Day 2. The bay, the city stacked behind

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The city tour ran us along Marina Bay. The merlion spouting into the water, the three towers of Marina Bay Sands behind, and the colonial quarter of white shophouses. Gardens by the Bay closed the day, the Supertrees lighting up as the sky went.

    Singapore01
Majestic Supertree Grove in Singapore's Gardens by the Bay captured on a clear day

Day 3. A day of coasters at Universal

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Universal Studios on Sentosa is small enough to clear the big rides in a day. The duelling coasters, the mummy ride in the dark. The monorail across from the city took ten minutes and we were back over the harbour by evening.

    Sentosa02
A tranquil sunset view over Singapore's harbor with ships under a vivid sky

Day 4. Sentosa, the slow afternoon

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Sentosa is an island of beaches and attractions linked by a little train. We drifted rather than planned, a beach hour, the cable car for the harbour view, an ice cream in the heat. The unhurried day the trip needed before flying home.

    Sentosa03
    Laksa — Singapore

Day 1. Laksa, the first bowl

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

We dropped the bags and went for laksa at a hawker centre. Coconut-rich, chilli-hot, the noodles cut short so you eat it with a spoon. A few dollars, a plastic stool, and better than the hotel restaurant by a distance.
