    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The high country inverts the national calendar. May to September is the season — the only months the passes are open, the Rohtang, Kunzum and Baralacha crossings clear of snow and the valleys reachable at all. Winter is genuinely beautiful and almost entirely shut: roads closed, hotels drained down, whole valleys cut off for months at a time.

Access sets this calendar, not comfort. An early or late snowfall can close a pass at a few hours' notice, so build a spare day into any itinerary that has to cross one.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

A tranquil forest path surrounded by lush green trees in Sultanpur Park, India

Day 1. Amritsar out, the Himachal road

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The drive from Amritsar to Dalhousie climbs steadily. Punjab fields give way to pine ridges within two hours. Dalhousie itself is a small hill town built by the British in 1854, named for Lord Dalhousie, and the Mall Road runs along the ridge between Subhash Chowk and Gandhi Chowk.

    Khajjiar — Khajjiar, India

Day 2. Khajjiar, the mini-Switzerland meadow

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped meadow at 6,500 feet, ringed by deodar. The Swiss embassy hung the mini-Switzerland sign here in 1992 and the comparison stuck. The kalatop wildlife sanctuary surrounds it; the only ones serving food in the meadow are the local cha-shops.

    Khajjiar02
    Tsuglagkhang — McLeodganj, India

Day 4. Tsuglagkhang, the main temple

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The Tsuglagkhang complex at McLeodganj is the Dalai Lama's official residence and the main Tibetan temple. Open through the day with the resident monks on the open seating area. The Norbulingka institute downhill teaches the old crafts: thangka painting, wood carving, statue work. Walk down, taxi back.

    McLeodganj03
    Wagah Border — Wagah, India

Day 5. Wagah Border, the evening retreat

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The Wagah Border retreat ceremony starts at five in summer. The BSF and Pakistan Rangers face off across the gate in a high-kicking parade. The Indian stand fills up by four; cameras and phones get checked at security. The flags come down simultaneously and the gates close until the next morning.
