    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    Don't come in August

Paris empties out in August. The Parisians decamp south and the city that stays open is the tourist crust, with half the good bistros shuttered for les vacances and the heat sitting heavy on the stone. Late April to June, or September into October, gives you the city the locals actually live in. The Riviera is the inverse: August is its peak and its most crowded.

    2

    The TGV beats the airport

France's high-speed trains run city-centre to city-centre at 300 km/h. Paris to Lyon in two hours, Paris to Avignon in under three. And you skip the airport entirely. Book the TGV well ahead; the prix libre fares climb steeply close to the day. A first-class seat is a small premium for a much quieter carriage.

    3

    Lunch is the long meal

The French eat lunch slowly and dinner late. Kitchens often don't reopen until 7.30pm, and turning up at six gets you a closed door or a tourist menu. Make lunch your big meal, especially outside Paris where the midday formule is the day's best value. And the café terrace is for the apéro hour, around six, not for hurrying.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

France works April to October, but the shoulders are the sweet spot. Spring. April into June. Brings the gardens out and the crowds haven't arrived; September and October give you the harvest, warm stone and thinned-out queues. July and August are hot and busy: Paris half-shuts for the holidays while the Riviera fills up. November to March is cool and grey in the north, though the Alps come into their own and Provence stays mild.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Scenic black and white view of River Seine and historic Parisian buildings from under a bridge

Day 2. The tower and the river at dusk

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

We did the Eiffel and the Seine cruise on the first full day. Up to the second level, then down to the quai for the boat as the light went. Paris on the water at dusk, the bridges lit one by one, is the version of the city you book the trip for.

    Paris01
Two hours behind — Monte Carlo, France

Day 5. Two hours behind a Ferrari wheel

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

The Monaco day was the indulgence. A couple of hours driving a Ferrari on the roads above the principality, the corniche dropping away to the sea on one side. The car was louder and lower than anything I'd driven; the instructor did the hairpins and let me have the straights.

    Monte Carlo02
Tranquil beach scene in Nice, France with clear blue skies and lively coastline

Day 7. Nice by electric bike and solar boat

    Day7
    ✦ Memoir

The last day in Nice was done slowly. An electric taxi-bike through the old town with a guide who knew which courtyards to duck into, then a private solar-powered boat out along the bay. Silent on the water, the coast sliding past, the engine making no noise at all.

    Nice03
Elegant French colonial-style building surrounded by palm trees in Nice, France

Day 4. The train south out of Paris

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

The transfer south takes you out of grey Paris and, a few hours later, into the light off the Mediterranean. The change is abrupt and total. By the time we reached the coast the air had warmed and the palms had appeared, and the trip had clearly turned a corner.
