    Honestly

Things most travel sites won't tell you.

On-the-ground details your designer wishes every guest knew before they landed.

    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Char Dham calendar is set by the shrines, not the weather. The four temples open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or May and close by Diwali; outside that window the yatra does not run at all. May, June, September and October are the workable months, with the monsoon splitting them in two.

July and August bring landslides to the Garhwal roads and ground the helicopters for days at a stretch. A heli yatra in those months is a booking rather than a plan.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

The grand facade of the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, India, set against a clear sky

    Day 1. The pre-flight weigh-in, Dehradun

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The tour briefing at seven runs through weather contingencies and the morning's flight schedule, and the staff take each pilgrim's body weight on a scale. Heli payload limits are tight in the hills. The next day's seating chart depends on it.

    Dehradun01
Stunning aerial view of Kedarnath Valley with majestic mountains and swirling clouds

Day 2. Phata to Kedar, ten minutes

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The helicopter takes about ten minutes from Phata to the Kedarnath pad and the temple is a short walk from there. The jyotirlinga inside is one of twelve; the line moves quickly because the pilots want you back before the weather closes in around three.

    Kedarnath02
Stunning view of snow-covered mountains in Kedarnath, India, showcasing natural beauty

Day 3. Tapt Kund, before the darshan

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

The Tapt Kund hot springs sit at the base of the Badrinath temple and pilgrims bathe there before going up for darshan. The water comes out of the rock at body temperature, which feels improbable at 10,800 feet.

    Badrinath03
Window side — Garhwal Himalaya, India

Day 4. Window-side, the Garhwal range

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

On the flight back to Sahastradhara the helicopter banks south over the Garhwal range and the lower hills near Dehradun. Three days earlier the same window had looked uphill at the peaks; on the way out it looked down at clouds.
