    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    Plan Your Timing

    When to Go

The Char Dham calendar is set by the shrines, not the weather. The four temples open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or May and close by Diwali; outside that window the yatra does not run at all. May, June, September and October are the workable months, with the monsoon splitting them in two.

July and August bring landslides to the Garhwal roads and ground the helicopters for days at a stretch. A heli yatra in those months is a booking rather than a plan.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

    Yamunotri pad — Yamunotri, India

Day 1. Yamunotri pad, the first dham

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna. The temple sits at about 10,000 feet, an hour from the helipad on pony or on foot. The bhandar at the temple cooks rice in the hot spring nearby; it's offered as prasad. We landed in clear weather and the rotor wash kicked up dust on the platform.

    Yamunotri01
    Gangotri — Gangotri, India

Day 2. Gangotri, the Ganga at first light

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

Gangotri is the second dham and the temple sits at the Bhagirathi's bank. The Ganga's source is Gaumukh, 18km upstream by foot. The pundits at the river bank fill brass urns with the water for pilgrims to carry home. The morning aarti happens at five and the temple opens shortly after.

    Gangotri02
    Kedarnath helipad — Kedarnath, India

Day 3. Kedarnath helipad, the temple darshan

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Kedarnath sits at 11,755 feet. One of the jyotirlingas and the most famous of the dhams. The helicopter takes about ten minutes from Phata and the walk from the pad to the temple is short. The 2013 cloudburst memorial below the temple is the part most pilgrims pause at. The line for the abhishek inside moves quickly.

    Kedarnath03
A breathtaking view of lush green mountains and a winding river in Himachal Pradesh, India

Day 4. Badrinath, the gold-tipped shikhara

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Badrinath is the last of the dhams. Vishnu's seat, at 10,800 feet, with the Nilkanth peak behind. The temple front is painted in primary colours and the gold-tipped shikhara is the iconic photograph. The Tapt Kund hot springs at the temple base are open to pilgrims before the darshan.
