    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

    The sarong is not optional

Every Balinese temple, Uluwatu, Besakih, Lempuyang. Requires a sarong tied at the waist and a sash, men included. The big sites lend them at the gate, but the loaner queue eats your time and the cloth is often damp. Buy your own for a few dollars in any market and you walk straight in.

    2

    Mind the canang sari

Those little palm-leaf trays of flowers and rice on the pavement and the dashboards are daily offerings, laid out fresh each morning. Step around them, never over or on them. The smouldering incense stick beside one means it was placed minutes ago. The family is mid-prayer somewhere close.

    3

    The Lempuyang gate reflection

The 'Gates of Heaven' mirror shot at Pura Lempuyang is an illusion. A man holds a phone with a mirror under the lens; there is no real lake. The queue can run two or three hours by mid-morning. Arrive before 8am or skip it; the temple itself, high on Mount Lempuyang, is worth the climb regardless.

    When to Go

Bali runs on two seasons, not four. The dry season, April to October, is the window. Sunny days, low humidity, the surf clean on the west coast; July and August are the busy, breezy peak. The wet season, November to March, brings warm afternoon downpours that clear as fast as they come, and the rice terraces at their greenest. Avoid the Nyepi day of silence in March, when the whole island. Airport included. Shuts down for 24 hours.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Stunning beach and turquoise waters in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Day 2. Benoa, the jet-ski spray

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The morning was watersports off Tanjung Benoa. Jet-ski, the banana boat, parasail over the reef. Salt and sun, then a shower and up to Uluwatu for the Kecak as the day cooled. The temple monkeys watched us file in like they owned the place.

    Bali01
    Kelingking — Bali, Indonesia

Day 3. Kelingking, the T-Rex cliff

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Nusa Penida is a fast boat across a rough strait. Worth a sea-sickness tablet. The Kelingking headland is the one that looks like a dinosaur's spine plunging into impossibly turquoise water. We snorkelled off the boat between the cliff stops and saw the manta rays cruise under us.

    Bali02
Scenic view of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan Temple by the lake in Bali, Indonesia

Day 4. The gate at Lempuyang, mist

    Day4
    ✦ Memoir

Up the east at Tirta Gangga first. The water palace with stepping stones across the koi pools. Then the long climb to Lempuyang. The cloud sat on Mount Agung most of the day, so the famous gate framed grey sky and we made our peace with it.

    Bali03
Scenic view of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple against a vibrant blue sky by the lake in Bali, Indonesia

Day 5. The swing over the Ubud gorge

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Last full day was the Bali Swing. Out over a jungle ravine on a rope seat, the rice terraces dropping away, and then the long walk through the Monkey Forest where the macaques run the show. A dragonfruit smoothie and the drive back to Kuta.
