    Things to Look Out For

    field notes
    1

India is not one country, climate-wise

Rajasthan in February reads dry-cold; Kerala in February reads humid-warm; Sikkim in February might be under snow. Pack for the specific itinerary, not 'India in general'. Tibro's per-state tours are tuned to one climate at a time. Don't try to chain three of them back-to-back.

    2

    Tipping is structured, not arbitrary

Driver tips at ₹500-1000 per day, guide tips at ₹500-1000 per half-day, hotel housekeeping ₹100 per day, restaurant 10% on top of any service charge already listed. Hand the driver/guide an envelope on the last day rather than tipping daily. It is more dignified for them.

    3

Tap water and ice are a real consideration

Every Tibro-tier hotel provides sealed bottled water in the room daily. Use it for brushing your teeth too. At restaurants, ask for "sealed bottled water" specifically. Some places will pour from a filtered jug, which is fine in some kitchens and not in others. Ice is the hidden trap; ask for "no ice" with cold drinks unless the hotel makes its own.

    When to Go

Kashmir runs on its own calendar, and summer here is the season rather than the thing to avoid. March to June takes the valley from almond and tulip blossom through to the high meadows at Gulmarg and Sonmarg. September and October are the autumn window, when the chinars turn. July and August stay pleasant by Indian standards but bring haze and the crowds up from the plains.

Deep winter is a real season here, not a write-off — Gulmarg's ski months are January and February. The caveat is access: heavy snow closes the Sonmarg and Gulmarg roads at short notice.

    Your Memoir

    Here's how you'll remember it.

Stunning aerial shot of Srinagar cityscape with surrounding mountains under a clear blue sky

Day 1. Dal Lake shikara, the wood stove on board

    Day1
    ✦ Memoir

The shikaras keep working through the winter. They have a kangri, the little wicker brazier of coals, that you tuck under the blanket on your lap. We rode out across Dal in the late afternoon and the boatman pointed out the floating gardens that get harvested even with snow on the houseboats.

    Srinagar01
Vibrant green landscape with mountains and wildflowers under a blue sky in Kashmir

Day 2. Gulmarg gondola, phase two at 4,000 metres

    Day2
    ✦ Memoir

The Gulmarg gondola has two phases. The second one runs up to almost 4,000 metres and the air thins enough that you feel the altitude when you step out. We were there in February. The skiers were lining up for fresh powder and the rest of us were just standing in the cold, taking it in.

    Gulmarg02
Stunning view of snow-covered peaks and dense conifer forests in Srinagar showcasing natural beauty

Day 3. Sonmarg, the road of gold at noon

    Day3
    ✦ Memoir

Sonmarg means meadow of gold. For the wildflowers, which you won't see in winter. But the deep snow has its own version of the name. The Thajiwas glacier road is closed past a certain point, but the local horsemen will take you partway up on Kashmiri ponies. Our pony was named Champa and she preferred the cleared track.

    Sonmarg03
Beautiful Mughal garden in Srinagar with red flowers and mountains under a clear blue sky

Day 5. Pahalgam, the Lidder river in spate

    Day5
    ✦ Memoir

Pahalgam sits at the meeting of the Lidder and the Sheshnag. The river is loud in winter, fast and silver under the bridge. The Aru valley road up from town is open in clear weather. We walked along the Lidder until the cold sent us back to the inn for the noon-time saffron kahwa.
